Turbine: Sounds in the Hall

Turbine

Turbine have been banging on the door of the big league jam band scene for a couple of years now. Playing hundreds of shows, showcasing a sizeable collection of originals and choice covers this NYC band is cross-genre foursome that is steeped in blues and folk, branching out to rock, funk and reggae. Their secret weapon is Ryan Rightmire's harmonica. He uses it in a straightforward way for a couple of bars before launching into an effects heavy journey using balloons and electronic gizmos.

This is the kind of band that needs to be heard in a concert. The next best thing is a live album and with the release of Sounds in the Hall, recorded at various famous outdoor festivals you have the power of this quartet in the comfort of your own home. While most jam bands have trouble handling the vocals, Turbine pulls off very convincing three part harmonies adding a touch of gentleness to their instrumental prowess. With the slow but infectious groove of Eddy The Sea, the party stomp of Maritime Rag and the bluesy Behind These Walls evolving into Phish inspired cow funk, the peak of the album is reached during Stand Down. Al members dig deep to hand out their bag of musical tricks to the crowd. Think blues meets hip-hop meets progressive rock meets jazz meets arena rock and then some.
