HCTF Poll

At the shows John Cale played in Australia in January, he revisited and reworked songs from his back catalog while the unreleased new songs like Hey Ray, (A Day in the life of the) Common Cold and Catastrophic were left on the shelf. Only Whaddya Mean By That got an outing.

He did perform two new instrumental pieces (Peace in the Rigging and Glen Gould at Work and Play) as part of the "Eight Hands" show in Hobart, a return to the piano pieces that dominated his musical output during his movie soundtrack endeavours.

His latest studio album blackAcetate was released in 2005. At one time a new album was supposed to happen in November 2008, but it's been quiet since the 2006 Jumbo in tha Modernworld single.

In recent interviews Cale mentioned that he has written 26 (or 27) new songs. Work-in-progress? Demos? Nearly finished? So will 2010 bring a new John Cale album? Vote and comment.

Chris Bell

Chris Bell (1951-78) was a major force in Big Star, but bailed out after the #1 Record was a commercial failure. He never got around to release a proper solo album during his lifetime - he died in a car crash in 1978. His full solo discography consisted of one single - "I Am the Cosmos"/"You and Your Sister".

Bell had been making tons of demos at Ardent Studios in Memphis and a selection was finally released as belated solo abum entitled I Am The Cosmos in 1992, with three versions of his signature song You And Your Sister.

Fast forward to the 21st Century for a Deluxe edition. While digging through the archives lost of hereto unheard songs turned up and they make up the bulk of the second disc. They have been scraping the barrel at times and "demo" is too big a word for some of them, but it gives the listener the opportunity to follow the process of songwriting, warts and all. Bell was damn fine guitarist and although he doesn't have the power pop voice of his former Big Star bandmate Alex Chilton he outshines at times him with his composition skills.

I Am The Cosmos is released on Rhino Handmade.

HCTF review of Dreaming of Revenge.

Math rock is a musical sub genre flying below the radar of the mainstream. The Apples in stereo dive in at the deep end with the Non-Pythagorean Musical Scale, invented by main man Robert Schneider:

A new musical scale is created by letting successive pitches have the ratios to one another of the natural logarithms of successive whole numbers. Most of these pitches bear no correspondence to the twelve tones generated by the circle of fifths, attributed to Pythagoras, or to the twelve tones of equal temperament tuning.
Successive notes in this scale grow closer and closer together, and the number of discrete tones in each octave increases nearly exponentially, with each successive octave.

Rest assured, Rob Schneider other main concern is trying to write the perfect pop song. He wants to be Brian Wilson. The new album Travellers in Space and Time is a continuation of his quest. It will be released April 16th, at the start of a USA tour:

  • 04/16 Cosmic Charlies, Lexington, KY
  • 04/17 123 Pleasant Street, Morgantown, WV
