Lou Reed's Metal Machine Trio
photo: © Amy-Beth McNeely

It's was the ultimate fuck you statement when Lou Reed handed his mastertapes of Metal Machine Music to his record company - four sidedsof noise that was released on a gatefold vinyl double LP. The album disappeared within weeks after its release, but proved to be highly influential. Ulrich Krieger, member of the Berlin avant-garde ensemble Zeitkratzer transcribed the whole thing in 2002 and they performed it live, inviting Reed to join them - a live CD/DVD was released in 2007.

Ulrich and Reed formed the Metal Machine Music Trio with whizkid Sarth Calhoun, playing improvised music and releasing a couple of live albums in 2008.

And now they bring the show to Europe, not playing Metal Machine Music once again, but using it as a stepping stone for "a night of noise".

Hands

Geoff Halliday and Ryan Sweeny are Hands, an LA duo that mashes traditional acoustic picking (banjo and guitar) with hypnotic beats and pulses served on top of harmonized soft spoken lyrics. They released an EP called Cities in 2008 and the new single Hold is more electronic with plenty of echo of keyboards. This is the kind of stuff that has "music geeks only" written all over it - it's that good.

Assorted trivia: all their songs have one word titles. They wrote the music for Less, a movie about an atypical homeless man.

Hands: Hold

Hold is released on the German netlabel Headphonica on February 26th. It is a free download.
