Star & Micey

Star & Micey are a Memphis band that sound like vintage folk soul group of the early Seventies. Geoff Smith and Joshua Cosby are childhood friends and when Josh ran into Nick Redmond on a songwriters night they decided to start a band. They took their name for their band from a change meeting between Josh and a homeless guy named Star who sung Josh songs about Star's ex-wife, Micey.

Their self-titled debut is a sad record that sounds cheerful. They laid down the tracks at Ardent Studios, a facility renowned for great recordings by Isaac Hayes, The White Stripes and Led Zeppelin. Inviting a host of guests to play along with them Cosby sings about the women who have let him down over the years. With Luther Dickinson (The Black Crowes, North Mississippi Allstars) and Jody Stephens (Big Star) lending a hand they can reach for the stars. They have the melodies and the lyrics - all they need is a big break.

Star & Micey:
Joshua Cosby: guitar, lead vocals
Geoff Smith: bass, vocals
Nick Redmond: lead guitar

Doug Walker joins them on stage to play organ and keyboards.

The folks of Royal Mail knows about art, but they know shit about music. They picked The Division Bell as the Pink Floyd album to be featured on stamp. Oh, and how about A Rush Of Blood To The Head? Is their a doctor in the house? Serious case of brain damage.

The 10 stamps will feature the following album covers:

  • Blur - Parklife
  • David Bowie - The Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars
  • The Clash - London Calling

The biggest punk scene in the world was in Los Angeles and BYO Records was an influential label founded by the Stern Brothers wo were in the Youth Brigade. They are celebrating celebrating their 25th anniversary with a box set containing a compilation album filled with punk bands covering punk bands, a movie and a book.

Let Them Know, the documentary, is built around the Stern brothers and their friends who were in the punk scenes. The result is an array of talking heads intertwined with stills and wobbly footage from way back then. You had to be there to really appreciate it, but after awhile the stories pull you in - the mishaps, the tours, the concerts, the riots. The Youth Brigade evolved ito the new wave band The Brigade before going for the Fourties big band sound Royal Crown Revue, landing an appearance in The Mask, a big budget Hollywood movie starring Jim Carrey. That's as fawr awy form punk that you can get and the Sternss were kicked off their own label .... But all's well that ends well - nowadays there's an yearly bowling event where they can get drunk with their punk peers.
