Post-rock never made it into the mainstream, but it had a huge influence on alternative music in the earlu nineties. Washington DC band Last Tide keep the wall-to-wall music alive on their EP The Broken Places. In the five tracks they go for structure first, with the melody riding shotgun. Shapeshifter is the stand-out track - the music pushes the dreamy vocals of keyboardist Lilly Dorot and vice versa.

Not as experimental as Sonic Youth, but with a broader musical horizon than the revived Dinosaur JR this band shows a lot of promise. With their ability to sneer and the gift to tell scary stories, Last Tide now needs to catch a nice wave to take to them next level.

Last Tide:
Nate Frey: guitars, vocals
Rob Miller: bass
Libby Dorot: synths, vocals
Misha Alexander: drums, vocals

The Broken Places is a self-released album. Release date: October 26th.

I have noticed, that 90% of the unknown bands that you feature here all have a female member in the band. Do you just have a thing for chick musicians, or coincidence? I just find that most bands having a female, are more for gimmick marketing, and less about muscianship. I'm not saying i don't like female muscians, there are some good ones, but there are also a lot of them in bands to look cute, and arn't really that good.

But most of these bands i see pictured, look like they have the girl , to look cute, and sell to another audience that might not have bought it otherwise. I could be wrong about SOME of these bands, but i know music pretty well, and most of these bands arn't gonna shatter the world with their music.

Coincidence. Bands that shatter the world with their music are rare, but you already knew that.
