John Medeski

Glide Magazine has an interview with keyboardist John Medeski of Medeski Martin & Wood about the Radiolarians project, a 3CD series that will be completed with the release of the third installment in August. The tracks for part 3 are in the can:

We wanted to stay in the moment. We never did more than three takes of a given tune in the studio and we never spent more than four days in the studio ourselves. The last sessions in fact took only two days. It took longer to mix than it did record because Dave (Kent, engineer) might have taken a day on each individual track.

Qui: The Little Golden Blanket

Heads up for collectors. LA band Qui has a new 7" exclusively for their appearance at All Tomorrow's Parties: The Fans Strike Back on May 9 in Minehead, England. Features David Yow (Jesus Lizard) on vocals.

The vinyl will be sold exclusively at the band's ATP merch table day of show, limited to 500, hand numbered units. Following ATP, the 7-inch (or what's left of it) will be available at infrasonicsound.com/releases.

As a nice, technology age perk, Infrasonic will make the tracks available as MP3's for free during All Tomorrow's Parties on the label's website.

Qui jumped back into the studio at Infrasonic Sound earlier this year to begin tracking material for Penuce, the follow up to their debut full-length Love's Miracle. With plans to release the album via Infrasonic's label already in place, tracking went so smoothly that engineer Pete Lyman, vocalist David Yow, drummer/vocalist Paul Christensen and guitarist/vocalist Matt Cronk decided to speed up the process and release two of the songs as singles. "Prison Braid" and "I Love You" were literally mixed and mastered by Pete in 24-hours, resulting in The Little Golden Blanket, a hand-numbered 7-inch on white vinyl, with original artwork by David Yow.

Sean Rowe

There are singers, there are vocalists and there are guys with a voice. Sean Rowe has a voice, a warm baritone that was just made for singing folk-tinged blues songs and he can play guitar too, using his acoustic like a percussive instrument. His debut 27 came out in 2004 and now the long wait for the follow-up is over. Magic is an album that should never end up on the desk of the Gray's Anatomy soundtrack people. He is a secret, and working outside the mainstream is giving him plenty of time to plan his next album. There's no rush when it comes to high quality songwriting. Recommended is you like artists like Steve Earle.
