Morrissey

Morrissey is the undisputed champion of saying something nasty in a soft voice. His new album Years of Refusal suffers form his youngish backing band, who all go "look, mum, I am playing with Moz and you said that there was no future in music and I should get a real job". They are too loud and ruin the nuances on the bulk of the tracks. Still, Morrisey puts up a fight and you can hear him despite all the mayhem. But it would have hurt if had slammed the band members heads together and told them a few thing of the art of leaning back.

They can do it on some tracks - the Spanish flavored When Last I Spoke to Carol, popyy tune I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris, and the best track It’s Not Your Birthday Anymore, in which Moz explains that "there is no need to be kind to you" and rages about the "syrupee things that we said"". No, he doesn't get softer as he gets older. And nobody want hims too.

Morrissey: Years of Refusal Tracks:
  1. Something Is Squeezing My Skull
  2. Mama Lay Softly On The Riverbed
  3. Black Cloud
  4. I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris
  5. All You Need Is Me
  6. When Last I Spoke to Carol
  7. That’s How People Grow Up
  8. One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell
  9. It’s Not Your Birthday Anymore
  10. You Were Good In Your Time
  11. Sorry Doesn’t Help
  12. I’m OK By Myself

Pop is an deceptively easy genre. Creating something that stands out is rather difficult. Zemmy, a 22 year old singer/songwriter based in London, sounds a lot older than her age.

She can channel Sparks' singer Russell Mael (Secretly Happy)) and her latest tune (Bleed Me Dry) should be Candie Payne's and Lucky Soul's shortlists for a B-side.
