John Cale: "I participate in competitions to climb skyskcrapers on foot, I want to improve my score/mark"

John Cale, founder of the Velvet Underground.

The legendary founder of the Velvet Underground with Lou Reed performs this week in several Spanish cities.

"The smoke makes me feel bad/sick - I cannot sing," says the musician.

"YouTube has played a key role in the campaign of Obama."

John Cale is a unique type. Unlike many, he is asked about the media/form/genre which he would be known for.

He wants to know if it (his music) is distributed in the cities where he performs. It's in England though, (he) adds, "I don’t really know why." And laughs. It appears that his reputation for being unsociable is a legend. Or maybe he’s just having a good day.

What can we expect from his concerts this week?
There will be everything. As always, variations on new (themes) ... I'm traveling with the same band, but I always like to change the show.

How does the scene feel after 60?
Better than ever! I try not to do the same thing twice, so there has been no room for boredom.

It is true that you have (tried everything). What remains?
I am interested in tango, a very passionate genre.

On his last visit, he banned the audience from smoking ...
Well, it is forbidden everywhere, right?

Well, here in Spain things are somewhat different ...
Really? Wow. Smoke makes me feel bad/sick, I can not sing. But the last time people respected (my request) and there were no problems.

Does he miss his days with the Velvet – (even) a little?
(Nope) Not at all (laughs).

And what is your view on the career of Lou Reed?
The truth is that I do not know what he doing. I do not
know if it (his career) is going well.

I listen to a lot of modern/current music, I am very interested in hip-hop

What music are you listening today?
A lot. I am very interested in hip hop. I like The Streets: Mike Skinner has a lot of energy and character, and doesn’t give a shit what they say about him. That's good.

And the scene in New York? Is there as much creativity as 30 or 40 years ago?
Of course! There are thousands of talented bands. It is impossible to find out about everything. YouTube and Facebook are good places to start ...

Speaking of new technology, how do you value its eruption into our lives?
Its influence is enormous. Look at the elections: YouTube has played a key role in the Obama campaign.

Do you think things will change with him?
Yes, but not as much as we'd like, of course.

How do you see the future? In the gap/abyss/breach, do you see many years to come?
I hope to stay in shape. I take care of myself, I go to the gym. And I am participating in competitions to climb skyscrapers on foot. I want to improve my personal mark/score.

BIO. Born in 1942 in Wales, but has lived in New York since 1963. Composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, he has produced some thirty solo albums.
