Phish performing Hello My Baby
Phish performing "Hello My Baby" at Walnut Creek

Back in 1997 Phish was slowly becoming a funk monster. After a short club tour of Europe they embarked on an USA summer tour of huge outdoor venues. On July 22, 1997, the Vermont quartet set up at Walnut Creek, Raleigh, NC, for a show that went down in Phish mythology because of the rain storm at the end of the first set during taste, with the band playing along with the thunder the thunder and lightning during Taste.

Phish: Walnut Creek

The entire show was captured on film, and the 2-DVD Walnut Creek, gives the viewer an opportunity to watch what was going on stage and to hear the show in glorious 5.1 surround. Since this is basically a video capture of the lawn feed that was used for the big screens this DVD won't receive any prizes for smart directing. On numerous occasions the director is showing the wrong band member - you can hear Page starting a solo, or Fishman singing, but you can't see it. The band was in good shape that night., They kicked off the second set which start with 20 minutes plus Down With Disease segueing into Mike's Song, Simple, I Am Hydrogen, Weekapaug Groove - playing without a pause for nearly an hour.

Add the rarily performed Vultures and a great take of Stash from the first set and you solid visual document of Phish in 1997. You can also buy the audio only version of the show.

Honey Claws

There is a lot of hip-hop vocalizing in the music of Austin, TX, foursome Honey Claws, but they are an experimental electronica band first. With unexpected breaks and twists they will surprise the dance crowds who decided to check them out live after hearing the catchy lead-off tune of their album Shout Out.

Trouble is: the music is far better than the vocals. If there ever was a band who should consider going all instrumental, it's the Honey Claws. Dance fans don't pay attention to the lyrics anyway.

Mitch Mitchell

Mitch Mitchell, the last surviving member if the original Jim Hendrix Experience ,was found dead yesterday:

Mitch Mitchell, drummer for the legendary Jimi Hendrix Experience of the 1960s and the group's last surviving member, was found dead in his hotel room early Wednesday. He was 61.
Mitchell was a powerful force on "Are You Experienced?" the 1967 debut album of the Hendrix band. He had an explosive drumming style that can be heard in hard-charging songs such as "Fire" and "Manic Depression."
The Englishman had been drumming for the Experience Hendrix Tour, which performed Friday in Portland. It was the last stop on the West Coast part of the tour.
Hendrix died in 1970. Noel Redding, bass player for the trio, died in 2003.
An employee at Portland's Benson Hotel called police after discovering Mitchell's body.
Erin Patrick, a deputy medical examiner, said Mitchell apparently died of natural causes. An autopsy was planned.
