Chicago Bluegrass & Blues Festival

A brand new music festival in Chicago. On November 22 the stage of the Congress Theater will be filled with big name blues and bluegrass artists like The David Grisman Quintet and The Avett Brothers:

The Congress Theater, in conjunction with newly-formed KingTello Presents, is proud to announce the inaugural Chicago Bluegrass & Blues Festival (cbgbfestival.com). While rooted in the foot-stomping influences of bluegrass and blues, the Festival will transport the concertgoer through the genre-defying evolution of music today. The one-day event, held on Saturday, November 22nd from noon to midnight, will serve as a tribute to two schools of music that continue to shape and inspire contemporary rock, jamband, funk, folk, roots, Americana, and indie cultures.

Part of the proceeds will be donated to savingtinyhearts.org.

Now that Wolfmother has been reduced to a one-man band with an uncertain future there's room for a new pet blues riff based hard rocking outfit. And it might as well be The Yelling from North Hollywood, CA. This quarter that taps into the Seventies (Led Zeppelin) and a bit further back (Humble Pie, Moby Grape, The Nice).

They are flogging a five track demo around garnering them some nice reviews. Catch The Yelling in a small venue before they make it big. Wear earplugs when you plan to go near the PA.

The Yelling:
Nathaniel Cox: vocals, guitar
Robert Davis: guitar
Michael Judd: drums
Chris McKee: bass

Live dates:
  • 11/05 Club Moscow @ Boardner’s Los Angeles, CA
  • 11/06 Future Sounds presents THE RUMBLE @ 3 of Clubs, Los Angeles, CA
  • 11/12 Club Moscow @ Boardner’s, Los Angeles, CA

Levellers
photo: Ami Barwell

You can rely on the Levellers. Britain's finest folk rockers with a policital conscience have been making albums since 1990, but they are a live act first and a recording band second. Their new album Letters From The Underground deals with contaminated water (The Cholera Well), refuges caught in raging wars, terrorist bombings (Behold A Pale Rider) and the USA trying to police the world and failing (Burn America Burn).

What make the Levellers bearable for less politically conscious concert goers is their high energy with the fiddle taking center stage, sometimes aided by didgeridoo player Stephen Boakes. The band gives it their all night after night, and so do the fans.

Levellers:
Mark Chadwick: vocals, guitar, harmonica
Simon Friend: guitar, banjo, vocals, mandolin, harmonica
Jeremy Cunningham: bass guitar, vocals
Charlie Heather: drums
Jon Sevink: fiddle
Matt Savage: keyboards, backing vocals
