Banderas (c) Ryan Thomas
photo: Ryan Thomas

Cincinatti quintet Banderas describes themselves as a dirty band and there is a lot of truth in that. This is a band with low slung guitars, throaty vocals, and in-your-face drums. They sound like an expanded version of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, with the MC5 and the Stooges lurking in the background. Their album Beast Sounds and Parlour Tricks is the kind of music you hope to hear coming out of the speakers of a battered radio on a construction site.

Banderas:
Jeremy Constantinople: vocals, guitar
Jesse James Ramsey: guitar
Cu Silvio: guitar
T.R. McHenry: keyboards, guitar
Donkey: drums

Backyard Tire Fire
photo: Eric Schwab

Backyard Tire Fire is into rootsy rhythm rock music. This trio from Bloomington, Illinois, have a knack for mixing smooth melody lines with leftfield riffs, meandering bass lines and counterpart drum patterns. The Places We Lived needs only about one minute to convince the listener that is a "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" kinda album. Standout songs are the title track, Welcome To The Factory, about a man stuck in a dead end job, and How In The Hell Did You Get Back Here?, a rocker that will no doubt be used quite often as a live encore.

Backyard Tire Fire:
Matt Anderson: bass, vocals
Tim Kramp: drums, percussion
Edward Anderson: vocals, guitars, keys, harmonica
