You will be hard-pressed to find a more "out there" keyboard player than Marco Benevento. You wouldn't espect that he would pick up the banjo, but that's exactly what he did for Bus Ride, the opening track of his new album Invisible Baby. Trey Anastasio came with the motif during the GRAB (Gordon, Russo, Anastasio, Benevento) tour and it's easy to conjure see the road while driving in the middle of the night.
Benevento teamed up with bassist Reed Mathis (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) and drummers Matt Chamberlain (Tori Amos) and Andrew Barr (The Slip), playing all tracks in a trio set-up. For The Real Morning Party he uses a quite cheesy sound to great effect, proving that there's still room for great instrumental in the 21st Century. Drummer Andrew Barr uses silver salad bowls on his hi-hat and at the end he uses car parts (brakes) to make that loud drum sound. Weird, but it works.
After last year's Live at Tonic, a 3 CD extravaganza, Inivsible Baby is a concise album, running a little of 40 minutes. No doubt he will twist and turn and expand these tracks when he plays them live.
