A great show enters the digital age. On DVD and CD (and good old fashioned vinyl, too): The Jimi Hendrix Experience Live At Monterey. Watch a clip of Hey Joe.

Forty years ago Jimi Hendrix returned to his native country and, in one fell swoop changed the musical landscape for all time. It was the galvanizing, U.S. debut performance of The Jimi Hendrix Experience at The Monterey International Pop Festival that propelled Hendrix and his band mates, Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding, to the top ranks of international rock royalty. On October 16, for the first time ever, The Jimi Hendrix Experience at Monterey will be released by Experience Hendrix/Geffen/UMe on DVD. It's a remarkable visual and aural document that reconfirms what the Monterey audience bore witness to on June 18, 1967: Hendrix's unbridled talent and flair for showmanship are unparalleled in the annals of music.

Tracks (CD an d DVD):

  1. Introduction by Brian Jones
  2. Killing Floor

Sadly even before Al Hendrix was old and infirm along with chronic alcoholism, he had little capacity or desire to understand complex legal documents and would sign pretty much anything. His adopted daughter Janie (no blood relation despite presenting herself to the world as Jimi's "Sister") simply replaced the crooked family attorney as Al's confident, had Al (now old and sick) sign everything over to her. His new attorneys were hired by her and crafted a an estate plan on her behalf that gave her complete control and cut out Jimi's blood family including his brother Leon who went from 24% to 0%. Experience Hendrix is NOT THE HENDRIX FAMILY! There is one cousin working there, that's it. Over 30 blood relatives in Seattle alone receive nothing, some living in the ghetto with health issues, on government assistance. She's marketed boxer shorts, golf balls, diaper covers, auto air freshner, etc. and as a self proclaimed "Good Christian" forbids Jimi's name and likeness to be used on any projects "containing any reference to drugs, sex, alcohol,or vulgar language." Moved his corpse to a purple "Grander Memorial" claiming there were no provisions made for Jimi's brother, mother, or any of there family despite numerous plots. It's a nightmare.

I'm torn between spending my $ on this new DVD/CD (and revisiting the sights and sounds in digital clarity) and supporting Experience Hendrix by purchasing the said DVD. I'm anxious to see the new digital transfer and hear the new Kramer sound mix, but do I really want to support Janie Hendrix and her "family" while Jimi's blood is left out in the cold?

Plus, is the new "stereo" mix any improvement on the Mark Linnett mix from 1986? I wonder if this release is mastered "loud" (and losing a lot of the dynamics and clarity) as is the norm these days. Who mastered the new release??

Knowing this item will probably be in the Hendrix catalogue for a few years to come, I just may hold off. Until I break out my wallet, I'm gonna dig out the Jimi Plays Monterey CD on Reprise and give that a few spins.
