Aaron Schroeder

The new Aaron Schroeder album Black & Gold drops somewhere in August. A wide variety of instruments is used on this one, including a vibraphone, mandolins, organs, clarinets and a lap steel. While listening to a couple of tracks it becomes clear that Schroeder sings with more confidence on his second album. He had the goods, now he dares to show it.

Bass player Justin Meldal-Johnsen lends a hand on What We Don't Know. Ben Barnett (Kind Of Like Spitting) provides a guest vocal on Call Out To Me.

Aaron Schroeder: Black & Gold Tracks:
  1. What We Don't Know
  2. Fake Crimes
  3. Emmylou
  4. All Along The Day
  5. The Mississippi Line
  6. Cold Country
  7. If You Please
  8. Backwoods Child
  9. Call Out To Me
  10. Hooray For You

Update: Black & Gold is now available for preorder on his MySpace site. All preorders will come with a pin, posters, and stickers (while they last).

DeVotchKa

Weird. You'd think with the internet and all that albums would be released within the same time frame. Not so. It took nearly a year for an European record company to release How It Ends, the latest DeVotchKa album. The Denver band is a rara avis, with prominent roles for instruments like the sousaphone, accordion, piano, violin, a bouzouki, an upright bass, percussion, a trumpet, drums, and a theremin. You guessed it: tons of Eastern Europe influences. This is a band who can turn a depressing mudd soaked festival into a freak-out frenzy. They are that good. Gypsy-folkie-punky tunes, a bunch of Devendra Banharts on speed.

The album comes with an animated video for the Vengo, Vengo (a song from DeVotchKa's previous album Una Volta). When you have watched it you just know you will buy that album too. They are on tour in Europe this summer. Catch them if you can. They might be playing Venus In Furs again.

DeVotchKa
Nick Urata: vocals, theremin, guitars, piano, trumpet
Tom Hagerman: violin, accordion, piano
Shawn King: drums, percussion, trumpet
Jeannie Schroder: sousaphone, upright bass, vocals

How It Ends is released in Europe on Anti Records. Release date: August 6th.

DeVotchKa - How it ends

Trey Mills

After producing other people records for many years Canadian Trey Mills decided that it would be cool to make an album on his own. Athabasca will be released on September 18th. The EP Saving Me features four tracks from this album and can be downloaded at iTunes. It features live strings, horns, bass, drums, banjo and an assortment of guitars. Stand out track: Best Week of My Life, naming all the places he made love to his girlfriend with bands like Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene providing the soundtrack. If the full album is a good as the EP, Trey Mills should be way up in your "best singer/songwriters of 2007" list.

Trey Mills: Saving Me EP Tracks:
  1. Saving Me
  2. Holding On
  3. Players
  4. Best Week of My Life

Buy Saving Me at iTunes or Musicane.
