Uncle Monk

Ok, which one of you who have thought that Tommy Ramone would play - wait for it - alt-country indie-bluegrass? Well, he does. He teamed up with Claudia Tienan two years ago, and together they are known as Uncle Monk. After playing the odd gig here and there the debut album is scheduled for release May 22.

We are making use of string-band instrumentation along with alternative rock flavorings. We're drawn to the classic simplicity of string-band music, but at the same time we are deeply involved with the aesthetics of indie music. There is a similarity between punk and old-time music ? both are home-brewed as opposed to schooled. Both have earthy energy. And there is a certain cool in old-time music that is found in the best alternative artists.

Tommy Ramone: vocals, mandolin, guitar, banjo and dobro
Claudia Tienan: vocals, guitar and bass

Uncut

John Cale is interviewed in the March issue of UK music magazine Uncut about the creation of the Nico albums The Marble Index and Desertshore. Both albums are reissued with out-takes and demo tracks as a double cd The Frozen Borderline 1968-1970.

We tried as best we could to separate the harmonium off from the voice. It didn't work as well as it could on The Marble Index. I just approached it as a piece of compositional exercise, of how to work with independent parts rather than with the core. I would improvise one independent line - usually the viola line - then I would play another line against the first viola line, not against the harmonium or the voice.
