John Cale

John Cale interview conducted by Andrew Phillips for popmatters.com:

I like finding new styles of expression, whether it's with lyrics or music. I like the new combinations. I'm proving it to myself. That has to be the first consideration, because if I can't prove it to myself I can't hope to prove it to anybody else. That's the rubric generally. If I'm interested in what I'm doing than I think other people will be interested in it.

Heartbreak Hotel

Ladies and gentlemen, boy and girls, here it is: Heartbreak Hotel.

Words & music by Mae B. Axton - Tommy Durden - Elvis Presley

Well, since my baby left me
I found a new place to dwell
It's down at the end of lonely street
At Heartbreak Hotel

You make me so lonely baby,
I get so lonely
I get so lonely I could die

And although it's always crowded
You still can find some room
Where broken hearted lovers
Do cry away their gloom

You make me so lonely baby
I get so lonely
I get so lonely I could die

Well, the Bell hop's tears keep flowin'
And the desk clerk's dressed in black
Well they been so long on lonely street
They ain't ever gonna look back.

You make me so lonely baby
I get so lonely
I get so lonely I could die

Hey now, if your baby leaves you,
and you got a tale to tell.
Just take a walk down lonely street
To Heartbreak Hotel

I think it's great that people tape, I think it's great that they trade tapes. I think it great that people are able to network and get exposed to music other than the commercial kind of crap that the record industry has been shoving down everybody's throat.
