Dutch cinemathographer Theo van Gogh was murdered this morning. He was shot dead after he had visited the local offices of the municipal council and was bicycling through the Linneaeusstraat. The perpetrator may have wounded another person, who still could alarm the police. The killer fled through the Oosterpark to the Mauristkade, into some policemen who had just arrived. In the ensueing shooting he was wounded in the leg. He was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment.
Film-maker and tv-presenter Theo van Gogh had been receiving threats because of his points of view concerning Islam. At this moment there are no indications that the assault is coming from that direction. It is said that the perpetrator did put a letter on van Gogh's body.
