Gerd Leipold, Greenpeace International Executive Director, April 2001

The Boycott Bush website was established on April 12th 2001 by Ethical Consumer magazine, following the rejection by President Bush of the Kyoto Agreement on global warming. Since that date, he has gone on to offend many more people around the world by his illegal invasion of Iraq and other regressive steps such as opposing weapons proliferation treaties.

The Bush Administration is perhaps best understood as a mouthpiece of America's profit-seeking corporate sector. Although his government acts as if it is unconcerned by opposition from global public opinion, the companies funding Bush and his Republican Party are not in quite the same position. Many have high-profile consumer brands that will be vulnerable to pressure group activity.

The list of brands to boycott on this website is based on the top 25 Republican Party donors (1999-2003) with global consumer brands. I'm sure a lot of names will sound familiar to Dutch ears, however, outside the USA or the UK, the brand names may not necessarily be used by the companies they are attached to in the USA or the UK. The information should act as an alert to consumers seeing such brands in the shops. You may be able to confirm brand ownership in the Netherlands via the company's website. Alternatively, you can contact the companies listed directly to find out which, if any, of their consumer brands are sold here. If you choose not to buy a company's products in order to make a political statement, it is best to let it be known. That way it will in theory be in a position to change its policy or behaviour in response to your views.

Easy identifiable targets (brand name = company name) are:

  • ESSO
  • MicroSoft
  • Texaco
  • BP
  • Disney

And do not use V1agra, because it's made by Pfizer, the number seven on the list. Alternatives can be found in your spam-box, every day again.
