&lt;P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 6pt"&gt;&lt;FONT face=Arial size=2&gt;Mijn beeld was, dat globaal genomen het democratisch socialisme werd onderbouwd door de vrijheidsfilosofie van Erich Fromm / Christian Bay. Namelijk, dat de samenleving zo ingericht kan worden dat het ontwikkelen van een ge&amp;#239;ntegreerde persoonlijkheid wordt bevorderd. Dat termen als zelfontplooiing, mondigheid en zelfs de &amp;#8216;spreiding van macht, kennis en inkomen&amp;#8217; daar uiteindelijk naar verwijzen. In mijn beeld was dat de basisvoorwaarde voor de economische herinrichting, maar ook het uiteindelijke doel ervan.&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 6pt"&gt;&lt;FONT face=Arial size=2&gt;De globale analyse van het beginselprogramma is, dat we in het licht van milieu ontwikkelingen toe moeten naar&amp;nbsp;selectieve groei. De uitsluitende gerichtheid op materi&amp;#235;le welvaart moet worden omgebogen. Een duidelijke echo van het &lt;I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"&gt;de buikriem aanhalen&lt;/I&gt; van den Uyl. &lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 6pt"&gt;&lt;FONT face=Arial size=2&gt;In het beginselprogramma wordt in het eerste deel, bij de diagnose van het Westerse kapitalisme gesteld: &amp;#8216;&lt;I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"&gt;van vrije ontplooiing van de mensen tot mondige individuen is vrijwel geen sprake&amp;#8217;&lt;/I&gt;. &lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 6pt"&gt;&lt;FONT face=Arial size=2&gt;In het eigenlijke programma komen de begrippen &lt;I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"&gt;democratisering&lt;/I&gt; en &lt;I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"&gt;medezeggenschap&lt;/I&gt; vaak terug als doelstelling; in die tijd een levende kwestie. Bij de paragrafen over Onderwijs en Kultuur en die over Welzijn, wordt gesproken over het ontwikkelen van &lt;I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"&gt;oorspronkelijkheid&lt;/I&gt; en &lt;I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"&gt;kritische zin. &lt;/I&gt;Ook heeft men oog voor de noodzaak tot &lt;I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"&gt;samengaan van&lt;/I&gt; &lt;I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"&gt;verstandelijke en emotionele ontwikkeling. &lt;/I&gt;Onderwijs en vorming moeten dienstbaar worden gemaakt aan &lt;I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"&gt;mondigheid en democratisering&lt;/I&gt;. Hierbij wordt ook aandacht besteed aan de benodigde diversiteit van de media en dreigende commercialisering.&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 6pt"&gt;&lt;FONT face=Arial size=2&gt;In Deel IV, De Lange Weg, wordt ten slotte gesteld dat de snelle economische groei van de jaren daarvoor voornamelijk gericht was op de groei van de materi&amp;#235;le welvaart en dat deze plaats moet maken voor selectieve groei met een nadruk op collectieve voorzieningen. Dit vooral vanwege het milieu. Vanuit die verdedigende positie wordt benadrukt dat zoiets alleen aanvaardbaar is als dit gepaard gaat met grotere gelijkheid en democratisering. Er wordt hier zelfs van &lt;I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"&gt;zelfbestuur in bedrijven&lt;/I&gt; gesproken.&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 6pt"&gt;&lt;FONT face=Arial size=2&gt;We kunnen gerust stellen dat van het hele beginselprogramma niet veel terecht is gekomen. Op de golven van het neoliberalisme zijn een aantal inzichten drastisch gewijzigd en in ieder geval het taalgebruik bijgesteld. Je zult een PvdA&amp;#8217;er vandaag de dag niet gauw meer over de &lt;I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"&gt;strijd tegen het kapitalisme&lt;/I&gt; horen praten. De markt als beste co&amp;#246;rdinatiemechanisme is aanvaard. Wouter Bos heeft niets tegen &lt;I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"&gt;private equity&lt;/I&gt;. &lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 6pt"&gt;&lt;FONT face=Arial size=2&gt;Het beginselprogramma is niet inspirerend om te lezen. Er zit een analyse achter van de situatie op dat moment in het licht van de oude sociaal democratische waarden, maar het lijkt een weinig doorleefd en doordacht geheel. Vooral als het op oplossingen en concrete uitwerking aankomt, geeft het een hoog &amp;#8216;o, ja, en dit puntje ook nog even&amp;#8217; gevoel. &lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 6pt"&gt;&lt;FONT face=Arial size=2&gt;Het is ontegenzeggelijk zo dat (ook) de PvdA geen idee had hoe je van een uitsluitend op materi&amp;#235;le welvaartsgroei gerichte economie kon afbuigen naar een selectieve groei met meer nadruk op menselijke waarden. Ofwel, hoe &lt;I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"&gt;de kolonisering van de leefwereld door het systeem&lt;/I&gt; kon (en kan) worden afgebogen. &lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 6pt"&gt;&lt;FONT face=Arial size=2&gt;In het stuk voel je wel dat men daar naar toe wil, de mantra&amp;#8217;s worden gezongen, maar hoe dat nou moet is een raadsel. Geen wonder dat de werkelijkheid h&amp;#233;n heeft veranderd, men had i.t.t. &lt;P&gt;&amp;#8216;(&amp;#8230;) This was more agreeable than the present style of the research papers or books which have so much symbolism and formulae on every page. I am turned off when I see only formulas and symbols, and little text. It is too laborious for me to look at such pages not knowing what to concentrate on. I wonder how many other mathematicians really read them in detail and enjoy them.&amp;#8217; &lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;To wit, these are the words of someone who really has enjoyed mathematics and has been engaged in the highest ranks of the subject for almost all of his life. &lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;For me this is quite a relevant statement, since I started studying mathematics at the University of Leiden (The Netherlands) in the year 1975. And for me it was like Ulam describes. Lectures in mathematics almost entirely involved the stating of theorems and the subsequent proofing of them. Little was said about the meaning of what was proofed, why it would be interesting, or even what the essential idea of a proof was; most of the time no background or context of any kind was given. A semester of Lebesgue integration theory was given without even referring to the problems that had arisen with more basic forms of integration like the Riemann-Stieltjes Integral. It made a lot of the matter less exiting than it could have been. And to be honest, most of the proofs stayed quite unintelligible: one could follow the details but kept missing the big picture. &lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;The point however is, that it only now becomes clear to me that I have been a fashion victim, that what I perceived as the way mathematics was done period, was only a relatively new style of writing and teaching, a fashion that had been en vogue for only a few decades yet. &lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;This reflection of Stanislaw Ulam is confirmed by Davis &amp;amp; Hersh in their 1981 book The Mathematical Experience. In a section on the philosophy of mathematics they remark: &lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;&amp;#8216;The formalist style gradually penetrated downward into undergraduate mathematics teaching and, finally, in the name of &amp;#8220;the new math&amp;#8221;, even invaded kindergarten (&amp;#8230;)&amp;#8217;. (p.344) &lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;And they continue with the observation that the formalist style might have had its longest time. Actually I&amp;#8217;m not sure that such a thing will happen. At least some of the formalism seems to me related to a certain machismo between mathematicians; the shorter and the less intuitive the proof, the better the mathematician. &lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;In their section on Teaching and Leaning Math, Davis &amp;amp; Hersh give an example of the contrast between a short formal proof and a more elaborate and a more intuitive one. It is about &amp;#8216;the two-pancake problem&amp;#8217;, the problem of cutting two pancakes in halves by cutting only once in a straight line. And the pancakes aren&amp;#8217;t on top of each other. The example of &amp;#8216;the two-pancake problem&amp;#8217; is put in the context of the contrast between what is called &amp;#8216;the logic of scientific discovery&amp;#8217; and that of &amp;#8216;the logic of scientific justification&amp;#8217;. The latter being a streamlined version of the former, a logically tight presentation with all hurdles and frustrations left out. It is a linear &amp;#8216;success only&amp;#8217; story, told in a highly stylized language, ideally that of formal logic. &lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;Now such a linear success story has only one goal, and that is to bring home the message of success. Formal proofs do that, but with the same price paid as with other success stories: because of the lack of drama it is difficult to get engaged by them and the insights that the storyteller gained in his struggles are not the focal point of the story, only the message of success is. &lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;So I think there&amp;#8217;s something to say for a math education (if not math itself) where insights from storytelling are used to bring home the insights of the great mathematicians. &lt;/P&gt;

Zal wel komen omdat de serie onder hoofdredactie van 'Prof.Dr. F.J.J. Buytendijk' stond en die was (destijds) de Nederlandse goeroe op het gebied van met name (existentiele) fenomenologie. Zelf heeft ie aardig wat uitgaven in de Aula reeks op z'n naam staan.&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;&lt;FONT face=Arial size=2&gt;Het hier genoemde boek van Barret is heeft als oorspronkelijke titel Irrational Man, wat nu niet dirert aan existentialisme doet denken zou je zeggen. Overigens gaat het boek daar w&amp;#233;l over. Het is trouwens &amp;#233;&amp;#233;n van de meer leesbare uitgaven over het existentialisme in de Aula serie.&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/P&gt;

Zelf had ik m'n kennis over het existentialisme uit een twee-pagina artikel uit een schoolboek opgepikt - in het hoofdstuk over moderne levenshoudingen van ons godsdienst boek. Dat belette mij niet om gedurende het daarop volgende jaar tijdens nachtelijke bijeenkomsten geregeld over 'vrijheid' te praten met die klasgenoot.&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/P&gt;

Niet alleen kreeg ik er 18 pockets bij (in de prijs van 0,50 - 1,50), maar ook heeft de Sint contact opgenomen met Het Spectrum en me op die wijze een 'volledig' overzicht van de serie bezorgd.&amp;nbsp;W&amp;#233;l zo handig! Dank u Sinterklaasje ...&amp;nbsp;&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;&lt;FONT face=Arial size=2&gt;Natuurlijk weer een fiks aantal pockets erbij waar ik anders nog niet dood mee aangetroffen zou willen worden (nou ja ..). Zoals een Bijbels-Historisch Woordenboek ((391) of Sandstrom - De Psychologie vh Opgroeiende Kind ((376). Maar ook uitgaven die altijd al .. zoals die van Nicolas - Herbert Marcuse ((472). Tenslotte degenen die je eerst met enige afschuw openslaat, maar waarvan je later beseft ... Einzig - Geschiedenis van het Internationale Betalingsverkeer. Dat blijkt dan namelijk aardig aan te sluiten bij &lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;A href="http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,63050,00.html"&gt;&lt;FONT face=Arial size=2&gt;Neal Stephenson - the Confusion&lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/A&gt;&lt;FONT face=Arial size=2&gt; en de financiele machinaties van de &lt;EM&gt;ravisante&lt;/EM&gt; en hyperintelligente Eliza. &lt;/FONT&gt;&lt;/P&gt;
