What strucked me early this year:
In Kenya is it still allowed to have New Year's resolutions. Here is the one I heard yesterday on Capital FM. It comes from a young girl, who won a mobile phone and free airtime with her resolution.
'I'm going to say goodbye to my sugar daddy, and marry with my boyfriend.' She confessed having that sugar daddy for four years now, without her boyfriend knowing it. A sugar daddy is typically a man of around fifty years and above who's having a very young girlfriend, or more. In return for sexual favours he's paying her education, supports the family by paying house rent, et cetera.
It almost sounds sweet, but on the other hand sugar daddies also contributed to the spread of HIV/Aids. For unprotected sex the rewards for the girl can even be higher. Then it's common for a sugar daddy to have several girls at the same time. Speaking about the boyfriend, in many case he knows, but has to accept it to be able to pay the school fees of the children. It's a sad story that tells about which choices people can make in situations of poverty.
