Songs from the cattle camp

Posted on Saturday, September 09, 2006 5:03 PM

For thousands of years the Dinka and other tribes in Southern Sudan are keeping their cattle in dedicated camps, outside the villages. There the animals are milked and taken care of. During the ages a variety of cattle songs have developed, and they are still sung daily.

In this rare video we are in a cattle camp just outside the town of Rumbek.

Time coded version for preview purpose.

I viewed the video just today, it's great Ruud. We hear and read and see so much in the news about the tragedies taking place in the Sudan, particularly in the Darfur region, that it is refreshing watching a report like this one showing people going abut their everyday lives and practicing age-old traditions.

I have all kinds of questions about the traditional dress the man singing is wearing, the patty-cake game the girls are playing, the meaning of the words in their songs, and so forth. Obviously cattle are a very valuable and treasured commodity for these people. Thanks for keeping us in the know.
