You know, after a while your sense of safety and well being detaches from the actual reality. In Juba in Southern Sudan I had an extensive security briefing about the hazard of land mines, being left after the war. Some weeks ago a UNMIS peace keeper from Bangladesh stepped on a mine and died. This happened near the grave of late Dr. John Garang. I was there to do some filming of a nearby camp for internally displaced people. The shooting went well, and afterwards I was told that I was quite near the place where the peace keeper stepped on the mine. Thank you, and happily I still have all my limbs. Still it made me aware that awareness of danger is a difficult thing to handle.Now back in Nairobi I just read the newspaper.A bus which I regularly use was attacked by four armed gangsters, and 64 people were robbed of their phones and money. Then a gangster was shot dead at a shopping mall which I visit almost every day. The police retrieved a lot of illegal fire arms, like the notorious AK47.It's something to think about as a journalist and as a human being. Sometimes the hazards in the area you call home can be quite big. Only here it is even more difficult to keep the awareness.
