Today is something you might consider a slow day. At least the wireless connection at Speke’s Hotel was totally absent. Here is where I get my morning fix. So I shifted to Harvest Internet Cafe, sub-titled ‘The Christian Internet Cafe in Town’. Wonder what’s the difference with others. A direct connection to…? Just came from the new mosque on one of the seven hills of Kampala. It’s still under construction, and will most probably be the biggest in East Africa. Interesting about it that the foundation was laid when Idi Amin was still in power. Every citizen of Kampala can remember the akward minaret on the hill.
Now since president Museveni finally granted eternal ownership of the plot where the mosque is standing, the construction can be finalised. Every mosque has to stand on own ground. There are rumours that Museveni granted the title in order to secure the Muslim vote during past presidential elections late February this year.
It’s an interesting story, especially because the mosque in Kampala has been funded with generous grants of Muammar Ghadaffi in Libya. If you at the look at the map of the African continent you will see that he literally spreaded quite a few mosques.
Will keep you posted, and btw: Thursday morning I will do the shooting for a feature on the stock exchange in Kampala. This will be number three in a serie on stock markets in Africa. Previously reported: Nairobi - Kenya, Dar es Salaam - Tanzania.
Maasalama!

Hello Mr. Elmendorp:
I am shooting a documentary for Envirovet, www.envirovet.org in Uganda next month. Can you suggest any video rental houses in Kampala or Entebbe that I could rely on in case of an equipment emergency?
Thanks.
Sincerely,
DAvid McGowan
