The nice thing of being a journalist is that you are supposed to investigate everything you see.

When walking in Kampala, you can see there is a huge mosque under contruction. I struck me already a few years ago, because the work seemed to have stalled.

This time I noticed the construction has re-started. Some research showed that it is the National Mosque in Old Kampala. A signboard at the gate proves it gets support from Colonol Ghadaffia of Libya. That's interesting, because I know he did the same for the Islam Religious Centre in Bujumbura in Burundi.

Browsing the Internet I came to know that the National Mosque is build under auspicion of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, founded in 1972 with support of the late Idi Amin. When Amin was ousted the inception of the National Mosque came to a stand-still. It was when current president Yoweri Museveni granted the land title to the mosque, the construction continued. The National Mosque will be opened February 2006. Just before the General Elections in March, where Museveni is to stand for his long debated third term, but that is just a detail.
