Connecting

In Sub Saharan countries above Southern Africa the Internet connections tend to be quite slow. For the growing number of video syndicators I need to upload chunks of data ranging between 130 to 200 MB. Sometimes the cyber cafes offer connections that go below 1k. It would take days to get news out. From my colleagues I learned you can go to the ISP's directly, and do the upload from their connection, which probably will be a lot closer to the backbone. Am in contact with a few, and they seem quite co-operative.

Hope it does not slow down the users in the cafes too much...

Hi Rudd,

Just discovered your blog today via the BlogAfrica catalog database. From what I have seen so far it looks fantastic. I wish there were more video clips and trailers on the site but as you point out in this post, uploading video files can be a beast down on the continent of Africa.

My friend Ethan Zuckerman over at Harvard University's Berkman Center for Internet and Society may be of some help to you in finding ISP's with big pipes for uploading files. Ethan is the founder of Geekcorps so he has experience with finding IT solutions in remote areas.

He can be reached at the Harvard project blog Global Voices Online or at his personal blog "My Heart's in Accra...". A really nice blog you've got here and I will definately be coming back often to checkout what you're up to next.

I tried to find the links to your video reports via the Dutch site referenced in your (English) reports. Having difficulty in finding any of them, where are they specifically?? My German language skills are excellent but my Dutch skills are bordering on total ignorance. Nonetheless I still would like to see your work. Help.

Thanks for the question. Actually working on a separate page with an overview on the reports. It should be online soon.

Which link you mean? Since there are more external websites that I link to.
