Went to Zanzibar in 2003 to report on the Zanzibar International Film Festival. On the beach of the main island Ugunja I met this fisherman.

Every days starts with a brief walk to the morning meeting, today at 6.30 am. On Muthiti Road I join what we call the walking nation. That is a stream of people along the road marching to their destinations. The term walking nation came into existance, after the 2002 election adagium: 'Kenya, the working nation.' Then came the great public transport reshuffle of February 2003. For safety reasons all mini buses had to be equipped with seat belts, and instead of 18 passengers, mini buses where only allowed to carry 14. That resulted in a doubling and tripling of the fares. Since that day many people couldn't afford the mini bus anymore. The working nation quickly transformed into the walking nation. It's two years ago, and still a lot of people are walking. Hopefully to work, because the unemployment rate is around fifty per cent.
