I just witnessed a heavy movie. This movie is good and strong and really recommended to children of ages 12 and up. Not only does it give them an image of one of humanity's darkest chapters, but also gives them values of life. The story is about Bruno, an eight-year-old boy, son of a German commander which moves with his family to dad's new job. From the city where is friends are to the countryside where there is nothing but a big house, his parents and four years older sister. A swing is built in the garden for him, but boredom strikes fast. Therefore he goes out exploring, even though he isn't supposed to. He finds the electrical charged fence of the camp his father is in charge of (we know that he doesn't realise that, as we clearly see that he doesn't understand a bit of what is going on in Germany and the rest of the world). Behind the fence he meets Shmuel, also a eight-year-old kid, which he makes friendship with. Bruno thinks the camp is a joyful location, with café's, entertainment and music.
As an adult, you're watching the movie and understanding every bit of what's happening. Bruno, as I mentioned, doesn't have a clue. Realising this and seeing the end come near, makes the final moments of the movie some very cruel ones. Not a happy movie, but surely a recommendable one.
My rating: 8 out of 10 |
