KIKKERPROEF
Men gooie een kikker in een pan met kokend water. Wat denk je dat er gebeurt? De kikker springt eruit. Een gezonde reactie. Tweede proef: Men gooie een kikker in een pan met koud water en laat het water langzaam doch gestaag opwarmen. Wat denk je dat er gebeurt? De kikker blijft zitten. Hij merkt niet dat hij door de geleidelijke temperatuursverhoging langzaam gekookt wordt.


De metafoor wordt gebruikt om het gevaar van succes aan te geven. Je dut langzaam in, door de soezerigheid, de zelfgenoegzaamheid. We leren weinig van succes, maar veel van onze mislukkingen. Mensen zijn minder bereid te leren vanuit zelfgenoegzaamheid: waarom zou ik in beweging komen, het is toch lekker zo, dacht de kikker in proef 2. Een andere reden waarom mensen minder geneigd zijn te leren is dat ze minder fouten willen maken en mislukkingen riskeren. Het is toch goed zo. Als ik in actie kom, verlies ik misschien deze warmte. Het doet denken aan mensen die hun huidige, misschien wel saaie baan prefereren ook al hebben ze zin in actie: "Waarom zou ik het riskeren mijn pensioen te verliezen" of "Stel dat het me niet lukt, dan ga ik er misschien wel blijvend met mijn inkomsten op achteruit". Dit zijn in slaap soezende gedachten die je in een toestand houden die je eigenlijk niet wilt. Het "warme bad"-denken zit sluimerend in gewoontevorming. Het gaat toch goed zo? Lekker zo houden, heeft niemand last van.
