I am cut off from the internets! I have been for three weeks now, and hoo boy, it sucks. No online newspapers, no blogs, no google, no youtube, no podcasts, only occasional Email contact. How did people procrastinate before all that?

Worse yet, I don't have tv or radio, so my access to world news is frustratingly minimal.

Maybe I should go out and buy one of those large flat paper thingies I hear people talking about.

Regular visitors may have noticed that sometimes my blog's layout is messed up, sometimes there is an error page. No worries. that is my provider, XS4ALL, who are trying to migrate their current blogs to a new environment.
Although I am looking forward to having better blogsoftware (it is about time... and... at least I assume that will be the point of all this!), I wish they would have communicated this to us, so I didn't have to spend all that time worrying about broken css or what not when I was on the road.

Oh well.
Eventually this will also mean a change in URL for the blog. I will keep you posted on that.

But that's only if XS4ALL lets me know, eh.

Can you imagine my surprise and glee when Dutch blogger St Maarten from the always inspiring Hetkanwel.net named me "the Netherlands' most scientifically enlightened blogger and warrior for the advancement of humanity"? Hmmm I may have to put that quote up in my banner...

But I feel the responsibility that comes with such a qualification weigh heavily on my shoulders. I need to raise my sights, for, after all, there is really only one goal for a self-respecting (mad) scientist who has the advancement of humanity in mind.

Part of the fun of having a blog is seeing what people search for on Google.

The most popular search term that, apparently, leads to this little neck of the woods for a couple of months now, should not come as a surprise actually. People all over the world, from Pakistan to the USA, wonder about this.

It is in fact a question that has been asked for centuries, I dare say, for as long as mankind has existed.

So here it is:

That was just a matter of time of course, when Google acquired Writely in March.

But do I like it? It is definitely different, not only the looks and feel of the on line word processor, now in Google style, but there are some new features as well (fonts!). Most important of course is the addition of a spreadsheet program. I can't see myself using it in the near future, but the option to collaborate with multiple authors is interesting.

Very good news is that while usage was limited before, now the capacity has been extended, so sign up at docs.google.com and start using it!

As for me, apparently publishing to my blog still works so I am one happy camper.

A few days ago I found a new trackback to a post of mine. I always like when people link to me, but this time? not so much. It lead me to Bitacle dot org (I am not linking to them). This site takes a blog's feed, kind of like bloglines, and publishes the content (text, images) on their site.

What annoys me is that they include Google Ads (as kindly pointed out by Jogy) in my posts and nowhere is it mentioned that I am the author. They then have the bloody nerve to link to Creative Commons licenses themselves.

Feh.

And then there is this.
Looking for information on who they are and how I can get rid of them I find this FAQ:

7. What happens if I don’t wish to appear in the list?

If you doesn’t publish feed, it won’t be included in the blog’s search. Nevertheless, if you previously has published feed of the site that was indexed, the old entrances will remain in the index, although the new ones aren’t added.

The blog search don’t follow the archives ‘robots.txt’ or META labels like NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW.

WTF?

Are they just terribly silly naive people, or evil leeches?
