Today in the newspaper Trouw, Rita Verdonk (minister for integration) tried to clarify her remarks (in Dutch) on her proposed code of conduct, which, among other things, entails that Dutch is the mandatory language in public areas, including in the street.

In this letter, she explains further why she wants to make Dutch 'mandatory' on the street (so she was not misquoted after all). Not mandatory as in a law, but as an agreement between the citizens of this country, whatever that may mean. It is after all the language that binds the Dutch as a people. I guess Verdonk has never been to the South or the North of the Netherlands, where local dialects or languages are spoken, which are not understood by people outside these specific areas.

Verdonk:

I don't object, for example, to two Surinam friends talking to each other in their own language in the street. But in some situations, when more people are present, it is nicer for others to understand what they are talking about. It is important that people are aware that others can't understand them and bear this in mind in public space.

and:

When people use their own language, which is not understood by others, in public, others may feel left out and this can cause annoyance. That is not xenophobia, it is a natural reaction.

But this is xenophobia! Xenophobia is the irrational or intense fear of foreigners, and when it scares you, when you can't eavesdrop on every conversation around you, that is irrational, or even paranoid.

I agree that this has to do with anxieties, possibly some fear of losing control. The Dutch language is just a very small part of the Dutch society. It would be so much better to focus on tolerance in this country's culture.

Mrs. Verdonk is clearly afraid of loosing the NL identity.
But I am glad there is a EU that cannot allow a 'law' like that where One force the others on speaking a language even in the street. LoL

Someone (a Dutch person) sometimes ago told me that the original Dutch anthem contain very controversial text... I prefer you go look for it for avoid missunderstanding.
That anthem was use till sometimes last century (no long ago).

Let's be precise... a phobia is an irrational fear (not an intense fear).
It is irrational because it is illogical and visceral: unreasoned, or badly reasoned. In other words, based on a logically fallacious argument.

Xenophobia is the irrational enmity and fear of that which is "Xeno-", simply because it is "xeno-" and nothing else: no room is given for analysis of the specifics; so it's a fallacy of generalisation.

It is possible to have a legitimate enmity and fear of that which is "Xeno-" if it can be demonstrated to be based on empirical evidence and objective research data.
The fallacy of calling ALL fear and enmity towards foreigners is ironically itself also a fallacy of generalisation; and thus a sort of "xenophobia of ideas".

In this example, the idea expressed is that speaking in a different language in front of other people creates a divide and suspicion. Such suspicion could be either rational or irrational, more information is required to assess this.
Nevertheless, I think the point was that it is human nature (instinct) to affiliate upon group lines; and for groups, once defined, to see each other as competition: this is where the xenophobia can have it's inception.
Though, of course, it does not follow that xenophobia is guaranteed to follow (that's the slippery slope fallacy) - communities can be divided along language grounds and work to blur the differences by learning each other's languages and sharing a common culture.

I think the guy was simply unable to articule the idea that language can divide people and create the RISK of xenophobia occurring.
"xenophobia" is a risky term to use because of its implicit tone of moral certitude and intellectual authority that is not deserved; when used as an epithet it commits the fallacy of blinding with science and serves only to further divide and polarise people: handle with care.

xeno phobia is just being afraid of other cultures and other different societies this is hard for the people with xenophobia and very offensive to people with different cultures and backgrounds as well as speaking a different language by the way i am 11 and have just written this on sunday 15th of july.i hope this helps you understand for all how hard it is to have xenophobia and how it effects others.

i think that xenophobia is when people of that certian country abuse the rights of immigrants.they do not respect them for who they are and what brout them here in that certian country.i think that we should fight it right now, not talk about it or yawn about it.

xenophobia is a fear or contempt of that which is foreign or uknown ,especially of strangers of foreign people.the term is typically used to describea fear or dislike of people significantly different from oneself

Xenophobia the concept? As much as people are clusterphobic it is equally correct to be xenophobic. We turn then to swift away from the reality that xenophobia has been since men existed been there. If one might recall the situation in Egypt when israelites were foreighners there, being illtreated by King Faro, it was xenophobia in action. It then should be concluded that it is natural to have a problem with a person who invades what you refer to as your "spot","place" etc.

im a young South African and would advice you adults to go learn more about xenophobia so that you may have a deeper understanding and be able to educate us...the future laeders of our country coz without your knwoelege and understanding about this it will be difficult for us to move forward. We are so used to the goverment doing everything for us, but in this situation there isnt much the goverment can do without the co-operation of its citizens. The Goverment has resources, legislative power and policies in place that are only limitted to the actions of civilians. This is directed at Sebenzile...it is quite ignorant of you to say that xenophobia is happening and we should just accept that its happening. Its like saying that crime is happening and therefore we should just accept it and let it be. You wont realise how serious the issue of xenophobia is unless you expirience it first hand. The solution of the global issue of xenophobia lies with the citizen in each country as it is the mind set of that particular individual making us the citizens the primary solution. need i say more? and Thulile Pakkies id like to correct you were you commented by saying why is RACE such a big deal? xenophobia is the strong dislike or fear of people from other countries and not racially based as for example the situation in South Africa where black South Africans are fighting against black foreigners!!!

This happens in a lot of countries. Some areas speak a different language and someone wants them to speak same one they do. I can see everyone knowing the same language but not making everyone speak it. You still need to comunicate so one language is good to know but not make everyone speak it all the time.
