Half-way through James Morrow’s 2009 satire Shambling Towards Hiroshima, I was convinced that my usual Reading Report should stress how, despite my inability to enjoy horror movies myself, Morrow managed to enthrall me with his obvious love and admiration for the genre.  And how witty, really LOL, a novel this is.

But, having read the poignant final chapter, I realize that Shambling is not only a loving ode to Godzilla, but also an indictment of the military mindset that lead to the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and a passionate plea against the madness of WMD.  Yet another brilliant and powerful addition to Morrow’s oeuvre.  Truly beautiful.
