Media Fail (Again)

An informed public is a precondition for a well functioning democracy. So is it any wonder we are increasingly turning to alternative sources for our information? Given all the misinformation, Mainstream Media should have a public health warning: ‘Can seriously impair your empathy’, or ‘Will make you dumb(er)’.

Love your Marshall MacLuhan quote! Our Dutch politician - Geert Wilders - must be the embodiment of this statement. Or at least proof of its validity....

But then... you statement about 'mainstream media'. There too... the trend to move away from factual reporting to presenting opinions (where possible including random bystander's view). It certainly shifts focus from understanding to 'news to create emotion'.

Good point Taas,
One the one hand it really worries me how democracy is supposed to function if nobody bothers with facts anymore, on the other hand it is an open invitation to everybody to jump in and join in citizen's journalism. I guess our only option will be to collect as many points of view as possible and hope that leads to insight ...
