Now there are of course still lots of things that could be build into this tool. One of the things I have been thinking about is a class model diagram. Just like they exist in Visual Studio during development. But with SequenceViz it would of course have to be generated through reverse engineering the code and reflect the types etc.

I have got it working in the Reflector related code, up to the point of rendering the types in a useful manner. The main difficulty here is to find a proper algorithm to layout the shapes. Also displaying the inheritance of types and optionally the associations is still work that is under construction. I haven’t discussed all this with Nauman, the coordinator of the SequenceViz project. So it’s not even sure a thing like this will finds its place in the tool at all.

Beside all this there is my day to day work, which at the moment leaves some room for some side work. And there are also some ideas brought up on the SequenceViz tool that need to be worked out, like filtering items from the diagrams, either complete types or specific methods. Also the displaying of nested calls on the same type needs some work. And there is an item about the scaling of the XPS file that is being saved. Currently it saves the complete Diagram control, but this leaves a lot of space along the edges. So there is definitely some work to do on that.

So, enough things that can be done on this tool, which by the way is a great tool, even the way it is today. Looking at the number of downloads, 388 already since September 24, you could also say it’s quite a popular one. And with 2 four star reviews, you might even argue it’s a good one as well. So when you haven’t downloaded this yet, go to CodePlex, download SequenceViz and give it a try.

later

Nauman’s blog http://weblogs.asp.net/nleghari/ has the details. I worked on the XAML part of the viewer. I have constructed the XAML viewer specifically targeting the sequence diagrams, and borrowed a lot of the Family.Show project. Nauman decided that the new viewer would have to replace the old SVG generating viewer. And that’s exactly what is now in the latest release.

So, go check it out: SequenceViz 0.9 :: WPF based Sequence diagram viewer

later

Meile
