Ik kan het even niet laten.

Een tijdje geleden schreef ik over oude gewoonten en symboliek waar het strafrecht bol van staat.

Over presidenten, jongste en oudste rechters, links, rechts, over raadsheren en raadslieden, advocaten-generaal en strafpleiters, over de hoogte van plafonds in zittingszalen van gerechtsgebouwen en paleizen van justitie.

Over het gebruik dat (ook) het publiek, de samenleving, gaat staan als de gerechtsdeurwaarder uit respect ‘De Rechtbank’ roept op het moment de zittende magistratuur in wettelijke volgorde de arena betreedt.

En dat daarna iedereen weer mag gaan zitten.

Behalve de beklaagde.

Die moet blijven staan.

Voor het hekje.

Een verdachte staat immers terecht.

Lang dacht ik dat dit in heel het land de oude gewoonte was.

Totdat ik hoorde dat dit gebruik alleen in Groningen gebruikelijk is.

Bij de oplevering van het huidige Groninger gerechtsgebouw, tien jaar geleden (eerste steen: Winnie Sorgdrager), kwamen de Groninger strafrechters in zitting bijeen voor extra beraad en de magistraten van toen vonden dat een verdachte het terechtstaan ook fysiek zo moet voelen.

Hij (meestal een hij) moet een beetje in zijn hemd staan.

Lang had ik - regionaal journalist als ik ben – er geen weet van dat de rechtbank in Groningen de enige rechtbank in Nederland is waar de verdachte dit staan moet ondergaan.

Ik schreef dus dat hier sprake is van enige rechtsongelijkheid.

De rechtbank antwoordde desgevraagd dat deze kwestie geen onderwerp van discussie is onder de strafrechters van tien jaar later, van anno nu.

Dat was in april dit jaar.

Maar wat hoorde ik vandaag in de immer gonzende wandelgangen van het Groninger gerechtsgebouw?

.

Dat het hekje gaat verdwijnen.

Heel binnenkort al.

Ik wil hier niet beweren dat…, maar vraag mij ondertussen wel af wat ze met het hekje van zittingszaal 14 van plan zijn te gaan doen.

Binnenkort.

Ik zou er een moord voor doen.
