Okay, apparently Tuesday nights (yes, nights; it's currently just before five in the morning in Tokyo) are mainly for hard rock and death metal on Big B Radio J Channel.
Now, I have a bit of a rock streak in me; during the mid-eighties I used to listen to Vara's Vuurwerk on Tuesday evenings (metal heads of my age range know exactly what I'm talking about), as I found it rather fascinating how these guys could talk with perfectly normal voices, and then did something with it to make it sound horrendous and death metal-y, with ominous sounding band names like Obituary, Morbid Angel, Anthrax, Napalm Death and Queensryche.
Listening to this type of music was kind of fun back then, and I still like to play an odd track or two to shake things up.
However, hearing a bunch of Japanese guys do this is rather silly. :) Perhaps I'm too used to the higher pitched voices of Masaru Sakurai of
The Alfee-fame (you might remember
me visiting a concert of that group in 2007) and
V6, but Japanese death metal just sounds too weird for my taste. :)
As I'm writing this rant, it's well past five in Japan and they switched back to the pop sound I've been hearing for the past few days.
I'm well aware of the fact that there must be a gazillion other radio stations out there for me to sample, but I think I'll stick to Big B Radio for a little while longer.
Cheers, K.
