Just got back from the cinema, where Matijs and I went to see Miyazaki's latest film
Gake no Ue no Ponyo (Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea).
An entirely different film compared to Howl's Moving Castle and Tales from Earthsea; this clearly is a children's film which appeals to adults as much as it does to children and tells a faery tale about a five year old boy who meets Ponyo, a female fish who longs to be human.
The entire film is set up in a way which immediately tells you there will be no fear, no evil witches or hidden messages; just fun for everyone who opens themselves up for a movie of this genre. It's been a while; I think Tonari no Totoro was the last one made this way.
The animation is done in a pastel/water colour kind of way, which makes it very different as well. The end credits are done the way the Ghibli shorts shown in the Saturno-theatre in the Ghibli Museum are.
All in all fun to watch, and I hope this will be the first Ghibli I will own on Blu-ray.
Cheers, K.
