At least, not from MY emergency power supply.
Yesterday morning, I noticed a strange smell coming from the closet where my
UPS (uninterruptible power supply) resides and sure enough, the battery light was trying to attract my attention. I powered my computer down and unhooked everything from the mains. Because I happened to have a spare UPS lying around without batteries, I scrambled towards my electronics dealer for a few sealed lead-acid cells and got everything running again in a short amount of time.
Upon further inspection, I determined that the smell probably came from the main unit, because after I powered everything down, the smell went away.
I didn't have had the time yet to screw the lid off of the main UPS, as it's bloody heavy with 8 batteries in the converter unit and another 8 in the extra battery unit, the UPS coming in at 2kVA which the unit can sustain for about 20 minutes at full load.
It's an on-line type to boot, which means that the output is fed from the batteries at all times, eliminating pollution from the mains power. Therefore I hope that the electronics are still okay, because while changing the batteries may cost me a good chunk of money at €20 apiece, a new UPS of this magnitude is a lot more expensive.
Wish me luck.
Cheers, K.
