Well, that was pointless

A few weeks ago, I was listening to a radio show where some guy told the deejay about his plans to drive a motorcycle through 750 fluorescent lights. Since I was kind of sick hearing that particular deejay talk (Giel can be funny at times, but is best consumed in small doses), I put on a CD and forgot about the whole thing.
Until a friend pointed me to this bit of footage (Dutch) on the web site of the Dutch trailer trash broadcaster SBS, where aforementioned guy really did ruin 750 perfectly good fluorescent lights by driving through them.

What the hell was he thinking? Those things contain Mercury vapour and as most of us know, Mercury is very bad for your health.
Furthermore, the glass breaks down into small shards, mostly to particle level, which can become very damaging to your lungs once inhaled.

To add insult to injury, a moment later, another memory came floating to the surface.

You see: back in 1985 this moronguy did exactly the same thing, only with 500 lamps.
What a waste, in this time of valuable resources and environmental issues.

When do we learn?

That driving through fluorescent lights isn't lethal at all? And just a waste of money?

Not immediately, no. And if you're suited up properly, neither is it lethal in the long run.

However, it's still a environmental hazard.
