Well, here it is:
What probably happened; the wire stands provided with the bbq weren't able to stand the heat as much as they intended, and the container with the charcoal just dropped enough to turn the MDF into charcoal as well.
A bit of a shame, for damaging a perfectly good garden table, but it's not that bad.
And it's another story for future parties. ;)
