Whee! I'm a happy man at this moment.
Back in 2001, I bought a laptop computer at MediaMarkt, from a company called Gericom.
One of the larger mistakes I made; not only did it tend to run hot (the air intake sat at the bottom, so I couldn't put it on a cloth surface) and guzzled battery life like there's no tomorrow.
To add insult to injury, the screen had a factory defect, resulting in sometimes having to wiggle the screen several times in order to get the backlight going.
I sent it back to the factory seven times to get it fixed, and still they couldn't fix it permanently.
They also refused to replace my machine, so I got stuck when the warranty ran out.
Apart from the malfunctions I mentioned it ran OK, so I couldn't bring myself to buy something new until the crappy thing gave out.
A while ago, Marli called; she wanted to give her old laptop to me, since she was getting an iBook from Thomas (check his blog over at
Kilala), and as soon as the transistion was made, they would come over to bring the laptop and see my house.
Only one condition; the laptop had some minor quirks, which I have to fix myself, but I don't see any problems I can't handle.
Today was the day; we had a nice afternoon and evening talking about the trip to Japan in December (Thomas is coming along), watching Gunbuster and a home-cooked meal.
So, here it is; in the middle of installing a fresh setup of Windows.
I'll be checking out the quirks later on, since it's getting late, and my alarm will go off at 6:00AM tomorrow, but I'm really happy.

I've yet to determine what I'm going to do with my old hunk of junk, perhaps it'll run Linux and make a cheap-running web server, otherwise I will go and remove the hard drive (a 40gig puppy I screwed in last year), after which I'll find out whether the laptop will survive a drop from a 10-storey building.
Either way, it should be fun. ;)
