Recycling is something of all ages. People try to re-use scrapped whatever, make it into something new or at least give it a try. The latter goes double when it comes to music.
When I started DJ-ing back in the 1980's, there were numerous covers, copies and re-releases of old songs, whether it's something used in a commercial, a tribute or just some composer with writer's block.
A lot of original songs have come out since then, but sometimes, it seems that the covers are outnumbering the originals these days.
Some of my colleagues like to listen to the radio while at work, and when I'm in their part of the building, I can't help but hear what's being played.
You guessed it; mostly covers, and not even very good ones at that (like To France, originally from Mike Oldfield, iirc, now covered for the umphteenth time by some act I don't remember the name of; or "Proper Education" by some guy called Eric Prydz, although he admits he's just ripping Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall". Oh, and how about this Billie Jean-cover by "Starzoom"), or just highly annoying songs, like Nelly Furtado's "All Good Things" or "Party All The Time" by a dunce named Sharam.
Sometimes, it seems that original songs are a thing of the past, and the only thing record companies can produce, is easy-selling junk which gets played just about every thirty minutes or so.
. . .
Geez, I'm sounding like some parent or something.
Well, I must admit; things weren't exactly peachy back in the 80's; who really wants to remember Rick Astley, BVSMP, the Wee Papa Girl Rappers, S-Express and Fun Fun?
Thought so.
All in all, I'm glad I'm not such an avid radio listener as I was back then; neither my ears, nor my sanity would survive, I guess.
