Experiments in Chinese/Japanese cooking

Every now and then, I'm having a movie night with a (couple of) friend(s); we order out for Chinese food or I whip up something and we spend the evening watching anime or other fun stuff.
Yesterday, I tried to fix something Japanese and something Chinese that's very popular in Japan; Miso Soup and Mabo Tofu. I found out they're both pretty easy to make (I went with the Mabo recipe from Blue Tree House, but there are numerous variations, so I played with it somewhat); only thing is that you can get hold of all the ingredients. ;) I do not live in Rotterdam, so the number of shops where I can get ahold of some ingredients is quite limited, but some shopping around at a wholesale market got me 90% of the stuff I needed. :)

It tasted very good, if I do say so myself (and my friend said so as well and we both had seconds, so I consider this experiment a success), but I need to adjust my ingredients somewhat, as I went a bit too heavy on the red pepper sauce, ginger and the corn starch. 500 grammes of ground beef also seemed a bit small when buying it at the supermarket, but filled my frying pan.
Needless to say, I'm having Mabo Tofu again tonight. ;)

Cheers, K.

First off, thanks for linking to Blue Tree House! I will definitely need to dig around there for some new ideas...

Then: sounds great, the stuff you made :) Makes me want to get stuck in as well... Too bad Marli's a bit of a picky eater, but I think I should just make the stuff and see if she eats it :p

Regarding the miso: I guess you made that yourself as well since you already had the ingredients at home anyway. Me, I kinda like the instant packets sold at Yama. They seem good enough for a quick dose of miso soup at home or the office :)
