Nokia makes E7 QWERTY slider official: specifications included

Nokia's just unveiled its aluminum-clad E7 QWERTY slider handset. One of the new family of Symbian^3 devices, it has a 4-inch tilting touchscreen display on the front and an 8 megapixel imager capable of 720p video on the back. It's said to be the best business device Nokia, or anyone else, has ever produced and comes with the touted ability to create PowerPoint slides on the go. The E7 also features Nokia's new ClearBlack Display sorcery and is expected to ship before the end of the year in exchange for €495 (before taxes and subsidies). By now you'll have noticed that the E7 and N8 are almost identical outside of the E7's 4-inch display and slightly bigger chassis required to host it. There are a few other differences, though. For example, The 12.9mm-thin N8 has an FM transmitter and 2mm charging connector unlike the slightly thicker 13.6mm E7. The E7's bigger display also trims back the reported talk time to 540 minutes (the N8 does 720 minutes). Of course, as part of the business focused E-series, the E7 also features a healthy set of preloaded apps including Mail for Exchange (with MS Outlook sync of contacts, calendar, and notes and multiple calendars with meeting request support), IBM Lotus Notes Traveler, Quickoffice dynamic premium, Adobe PDF reader, and F-Secure Anti-theft. The N8 counters with the better camera and stereo mic, thanks to a big 1/1.83-inch 12 megapixel sensor and Xenon flash that require some extra girth on the backend. Oh, and no MicroSD slot on the E7 -- you get 16GB and that's it.

Android accounts for one-quarter of mobile web traffic in the US, says Quantcast

92diggsdigg It's terribly difficult to get reliable statistics, as numbers tend to vary drastically depending upon whom you ask, but if you're inclined to believe that Android is mopping up Apple and RIM's declining mobile mindshare in the US, you'll find nothing but corroboration from Quantcast. The analytics firm reckons a full one-quarter of mobile web traffic stateside comes from devices running Google's OS, though it's important to know that the iOS tallies apparently don't include the web-friendly iPad. You also might want to note that this is mobile web traffic here -- these days, we spend an increasing amount of our internet time in apps -- and since we're on a roll with the disclaimers, let's just add that these numbers have nothing to do with a company's financial success. Nokia can attest to that.

Rumour: New Nokia Handsets for 2010 (N8-00, C5-00, 6700 slide, C3-00 and C5-01)

A few days of starting the Mobile Word Congress in Barcelona (MWC), we were able to get more exclusive information on new Nokia.

First major upheaval, Nokia is moving towards the end of names as they are currently known: Classic XpressMusic, etc.. They are now letters and numbers that identify five ranges:

C: input-end voice-based.
X: focus on entertainment, music for a young target
E: dedicated to business, solutions for e-mails
N: upmarket
S: very upscale and limited editions

The N8-00: Symbian 3 720p and HDMI

Among the specifications of the fourteen new that we were able to obtain five will be highlighted by Nokia as major models.

The C5-00 surf on a basic business trend. Equipped with a GPS, it will be available in June at SFR.

The 6700 slide still has an old name. Sold approximately 140 euros, it will have a photo sensor to 5 megapixels, Carl Zeiss optics and is available in 6 colors (yellow excluded from Orange and SFR in pink).

The C3-00 is a kind of multitasking S40 to allow receive e-mails. Equipped with a full keyboard, it will target young people for release in July. Nokia hopes to make good sales on this model sold only 46 euros in escrow account.

The C5-01 will stand as a direct competitor to BlackBerry, a C3-00 better equipped. GPS and full keyboard, it will be launched in July this important market for Nokia.

Finally, the N8-00 will certainly be the biggest release of Nokia for the first half. Scheduled for summer, it will be fully touch and multitouch display thanks to its capacity of 3.5 inches. It will mainly be the first to offer mobile Symbian 3. Focusing on HD, it will carry a 12-megapixel sensor and capture in 720p at 30 frames per second. It will also be equipped with an HDMI output, it also refers to the reading of Divx, but the latter is not yet confirmed. Nokia will also make an entry into the web TV: in partnership with operators, VOD will be proposed, in part through its online store OVI. This will download episodes of series through a simple widget.

Google to produce and sell own "Nexus One" android based mobile phone (picture included): or as AKA Google phone or HTC passion

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Google Inc plans to sell its own cellphone direct to consumers as soon as next year, bypassing wireless operators in a rare strategic move, the Wall Street Journal cited sources as saying on Saturday.

Called the Nexus One and made by smartphone maker HTC, the phone will run on the search giant's Android operating system -- around which Motorola and other cellphone makers have built devices -- and will be sold online, the newspaper cited persons familiar with the matter as saying.

Cellular service will have to be bought separately, it added.

The Internet search leader may be sounding a challenge to wireless carriers such as Sprint and Verizon, as well as smartphone makers like Apple. It marks a departure for the leader in Web advertising, which has rarely sold devices directly to consumers, the newspaper said.

Google's Android phones have won attention in the mobile industry lately, with Motorola and Sony Ericsson choosing to launch it with their new top models.

Analysts say the aim is to gain access to valuable consumer data that can be used to sell ads at premium prices, rather than to make money from direct hardware sales, as companies such as Nokia or Research in Motion do.

Research house IDC estimates the market share for Android operating software rose to 5.4 percent from 4.2 percent in July-September in Western Europe, a key market.

Executives at HTC, the Taiwan-based world's No. 4 smartphone brand, were not available for comment. Google was also not available for comment. Google began sharing a version of the Nexus One with employees in recent days, the newspaper cited its sources as saying.

Motorola Motus rumored to sport reverse keyboard and backside touchpad?

The metaphorical ink on the just-leaked Motorola (NYSE: MOT) Motus spy pic hasn’t yet dried and were already hearing rumors that the Android handset will sport some really unique features. If you thought the form factor was a bit odd, you’re going to want to sit down for this. Word has it that the Moto Motus will feature a “reverse flip keyboard,” and (as if that isn’t crazy enough) something called a “rear directional touchpad.” Of course, the Motus is also rumored to be packing the usual assortment of smartphone features.

All this is completely unconfirmed at the moment, but Android And Me are saying that the Motus will feature a 3.1-inch touchscreen, a 5-megapixel camera (with LED flash), 3G data, WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth 2.0. Android 1.5 OS should be running the show with Motorola’s social network-savvy Motoblur UI skinned atop. As for the geeky specs, were expecting a 528 MHz Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) MSM7201A CPU, 512 MB ROM / 256 MB RAM, quad band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM radio, and a never-been-done-before quintuple (yes, thats five bands) WCDMA radio pulling down 3G service on the 850Mhz, 900Mhz, 1700Mhz, 1900Mhz, and 2100Mhz bands! For those of you keeping score, that would mean the Motus can hop on any 3G network in the world (even T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) USAs wonky 1700Mhz 3G network) and work as the mobile gods intended.

The “reverse flip keyboard” kinda, sorta, makes sense, given the quirky looking keyboard in the spy pic. That “rear directional touchpad,” however, is just plain confusing. A touchpad on the backside of the touchscreen? Your guess is as good as ours. Whatever it turns out to be, we’re hoping it changes the way we think about interacting with touchscreens.

Nokia Ovi Store Stats: Almost half a billion downloads?

Bill Perry, Senior Services Marketing Manager for Forum Nokia (NYSE: NOK), posted some statistics from the Ovi Store which has now been open for 5 months. The Ovi Store is available on over 100 devices, with users from over 180 different countries, and developers from 65 countries. There are 8 countries that have an Ovi Store in their native language and support operator billing: UK, Spain, France, Germany, Singapore, Australia, Italy and Russia. By the end of Q1 2010, that number should rise to over 20 countries. The top 10 countries accessing the Ovi Store are Egypt, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Russia and the UK. In most of those countries the top 2 devices used to get to the Ovi Store are either the Nokia 5800 or N97. Each registered user downloads an average of 8 pieces of content, and the number of downloads in October compared to September is up by 70%.

Couple that data above with the information Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo gave during the Q3 2009 financial results conference call held on the 15th of October, where he said:

We grew our active users from 46 million to 61 million.

61 million users x average of 8 pieces of content per user = 488 million downloads?

Why isn’t Bill Perry providing any figures such as number of applications? The media would take that number and compare it to the massive 100,000+ applications in Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s App Store and claim Nokia is failing.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X3 (Rachel) with Android on schedule

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 isn’t yet officially official in the US and we’re already hearing of the first Android-powered XPERIA coming to market. SEMCblog is saying that the Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) (NYSE: SNE) XPERIA X3 (codename: Rachel) is due to be announced in early November, bearing the kind of spec-sheet befitting an XPERIA smartphone – 4-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen, 8.1-megapixel camera, 1Ghz Snapdragon processor, GPS, WiFi, 3G data and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It’ll likely run the Android 2.0 OS (Eclair) that is expected to be released by Google (NSDQ: GOOG) (NSDQ: GOOG) any day now.

What you see here is the first live shot of the XPERIA X3 hanging out in the wild. It’s something of a milestones for uber-geeks like us.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X3 will launch as the company’s first Android phone in Sensuous Black and Luster White, otherwise known as “Black” and “White.” We’re expecting to see the “Rachel UI” giving the traditional Android homescreen a bit of a makeover when it goes live on the XPERIA X3.

As far as we know, the speculated January launch window is still on track. The XPERIA X3’s Snapdragon proccesor, Android OS and 8.1-megapixel camera should make for one truly amazing smartphone when it launches. We can’t wait.
