During the last couple of months there was a special interest of different parties in the increase of speed supported by mobile networks. Most mobile operators in Western Europe have rolled out HSDPA at a speed of 1.8Mbps. Even some operators are rolling out or are planning to support 3.6 Mbps in the download for this year. The technology of the radio networks already supports speeds upto 7.2 Mbps in the download. But with Enhanced uplink of HSUPA the speeds for the uplink will go to 2.1 Mbps. This will support the development of VoIP over mobile, p2p applications and streaming video from your mobile to others.
As usual the end-user equipment is lagging behind. But at this very moment you can already find products of all the major card vendors [No handsets yet]. But at this moment I have to add that none of the cards is stable and therefore not available for commercial usage. I will give a short summary of the available cards:
All cards are based on the MSM7200 chipset solution of Qualcomm.
Also the combination with a 3G wireless routers seams very interesting to me. Think of the WRG of Dovado or the D-link 3G router.
Now we have to wait for the mobile handsets to support HSUPA. I think that we will see these devices in MID 2009 at 2 or more vendors. Who gives more?
