When thinking about the revolution that is going on in the fixed line space with VoIP, one could also think of the implication that it can have on the mobile space. On the first hand I have to say that the current developments show that for the coming 5 years the voice part (running over circuit switched network) will remain because of the poor quality of the mobile data networks. The biggest problem is the latency and the packet loss in these kind of networks. The force that is trying to break this development is the Quality of Service (QoS) control. With the QoS control one can differentiate the QoS per service per user. An interesting link to look at is the standardisation work that is going on in the ITU space with the development of a RACF:
When looking at the current mobile terminals the question in my head raises why I should not use a data-only USIM in my terminal with some relevant application on top of it. So when I am looking ahead I would take the W950i Sony Ericsson phone.

The phone is compact and has all Mobile Access Technologies aboard. On top of that is has a 4Gb storage where I can store my music and other relevant documents. Of course there are still some limitation like for instance: battery lifetime and UMTS coverage, but no innovation without limitations!
