My sister actually posted on her blog! Wh000t!

I considder this a major milestone in my quest to get the entire world to start blogging! Bwhua ha ha!

For a first post its pretty big, and also raises a good question we where wondering about earlier. Why should history matter to us? Why is it inportant that we should know our history.

Now personally, I feel history is important, and personally I find it interesting. But I am having some trouble in actually justifying why the common man should actually care, even though I feel that he should.

Lets have a google and some copy-pasting:

Why Study History? - HistoryGuide.org
Let's face it, our first experience with History is that it is a course that we have to take in order to graduate. As a junior and senior high school student we are confronted with American history, state history and perhaps even a general course in western civilization or world history. We didn't have a choice. And the fact that we are forced to take history puts us on the offensive. We begin to build that grandiose brick wall that will prevent us from getting anything important out of history.

Why Study History? - The American Historical Association
People live in the present. They plan for and worry about the future. History, however, is the study of the past. Given all the demands that press in from living in the present and anticipating what is yet to come, why bother with what has been? Given all the desirable and available branches of knowledge, why insist—as most American educational programs do—on a good bit of history? And why urge many students to study even more history than they are required to?

Why Study History? - history.hanover.edu
It is commonly acknowledged that an understanding of the past is fundamental to an understanding of the present. The analysis and interpretation of history provide an essential context for evaluating contemporary institutions, politics, and cultures. Understanding the present configuration of society is not the only reason to study the past; history also provides unique insight into human nature and human civilization. By demanding that we see the world through the eyes of others, that we develop a sense of context and coherence while recognizing complexity and ambiguity, and that we confront the record not only of human achievement but also of human failure, cruelty, and barbarity, the study of history provides us with a richly-textured, substantive framework for understanding the human condition and grappling with moral questions and problems. History is essential to the traditional objectives of the liberal arts, the quest for wisdom and virtue.

In the final analysis history solves and settles nothing. We cannot and must not hope for final solutions. History shows us something far more valuable for our living purposes. It is perhaps the best means to achieving full consciousness of both necessity and freedom, permanence and change - of the always difficult but honorable terms of mortality, on which human beings have repeatedly failed, and in failure have created deathless values. In this consciousness we may know more freedom amid our necessities, more rest amid change.

to me, history is a big long list of cultural, political, social and environmental fuck-ups that we should do our best to ensure do not happen again.... unfortunately modern people are as stupid as people have ever been, historically speaking, and so the world is still quite officially fucked.

Oke.. here is a question.. Does Steeph actually post about anything else  than Bush, the election, and Bush's desctructive American forreign policy? (Just kidding Steeph, I like your posts )

Dad is on vacation, mum is on vacation. Neighbour just got back from vacation, housemate is going on vacation.

Am I the only that doesn't want to go on vacation?

I really dont see the point. I would be so very bored. Of course.. I only say this as I have never really been on holiday in my adult life. But seriously.. I have no idea what I would do.. but be bored.

Is it just me or has the xs4all blogging community exploded in recent days! wow!

I am a little worried that this blog is still being called 'experimental' ... I hope they dont just close it suddenly and delete all my posts!

Study is progressing.. albeit slowly.

Yesterday was spent with one of my favorite IT passtimes, creating a distribution share for Windows Server 2003 installations. Well it truth its not that exiting, but I needed a fast and conveniant way to get Windows Server installed, and the classroom image server didn't have any clean Server images on it. It was also a nice demo for other people there.

I feel slightly guilty now though, as unnatended installations and distribution methods are not actually a part of the module I am suppose to be studying. Made up for that today though, spent most of the day getting into the nitty-gritty of TCP/IP, and subnetting in particular. I just cant seem to get my head around things like variable lenth subnet masks though!

It always amazes me that I always seem to have to learn it all over again. I usually get down to studying it, and finally 'getting' it ... then too much time passes and I have to start over. Why cant I just keep remembering it, I mean, its not like I don't have to deal with this stuff on a daily basis. Study remains a problem in this manner.. its not just subnetting and the like, its any dry knowledge that I have to digest via books.. it just doesn't stick very long. I just hope it sticks long enough for the exam.
