Typo3?

Typo3 is just like WordPress a popular PHP/MySQL rig. And there we have it again:

While I admire the effort put in all the tedious functionality provided by Typo3 to look a lot like an enterprise level tool, there is too much focus on catering for the $1/month hosting users who hardly have SSH access, run everything as the same/only user who has write access to everything and don't have a choice concerning what database to use. And sadly, the crowd that has a $1/month hosting mentality defines what is popular and considered a good choice for the rest.

So if an application doesn't aspire to offer the option to use the most advanced option, why should it aspire to be the most advanced option itself?

WordPress?

Because this .Text blogging application is sucking harder and harder I looked at some other applications, WordPress being the most prominent. WordPress is a PHP+MySQL rig, so we don't expect too much from it. It's nice that it's apt-get installable on Debian, but if we then try to upload an image:

Unable to create directory /usr/share/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/08. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

Huh? We've given WordPress write access to our MySQL database already, why would it need write access on the filesystem to store images? Because somehow the database is too crappy to store blobs without a performance hit, the programmers don't know how to do it, or it somehow is a feature to make scaling and migration more complicated than just moving a database around?

Long weekend

Last Thursday I took my Samsonite Sky Wheeler 67 to work in Rotterdam to go that evening directly to the Dutch Perl Workshop in Arnhem. Friday I gave my presentation, attended presentations of others and bought a EUR 100 Vienna YAPC T-shirt at the auction. The evening was about Fluxx till 3 AM, and 3 hours later on Saturdaymorning I had to get up to get the train to Hamburg. Hamburg was as usual, and Mondaynight I returned home to show up at work Tuesdaymorning.

The Making Of IN10 X-mas card 2006

Last week the crew of IN10 Communicatie got together to shoot the last part of the IN10 X-mas card 2006. We managed to pull it off in only a couple of takes before it got seriously dark around the Veerhaven. And the result is surprisingly good given the fact we had no crowd control.

Freestyle Cruisin'! Named like a type of cocaine, the Norwegian Pearl was in Rotterdam for 2 days. Wednesday night she left with impressive fireworks, but returned thursday to the Holland-Amerika kade. (But we're still kind of wondering what the sign 187 means...)

Only after working for months on De Show van je Leven I noticed the characters voice is a lot like the famous C1000 voice. Probably only then I heard him on the radio saying "year" and "euro", which made the quarter fall so to say... But no matter how nice it all seems in the beginning, debugging interactive stuff with video or voice tends to get annoying after hearing it all like one hundred times. And even on holiday you hear his voice in your head saying "Exciting!".
