2005 Edition
“The Family That Eats Soil“
Well.. My second official movie at the festival was quite a crap experience. A Philippine film about.. uhm.. ah.. uhm? About a very, very weird family, showing the viewer the mentally distorted, sexual, philosophical and whatever experiences of each and every family member.
The setup of the movie was interesting: the story is centered around the different mealtimes, like lunch and dinner, where we see the whole
family sitting at the dinner table. But that's where the interesting stuff ends coz everything else is quite a waste of time, spent on visual shockedelica: semi-explicit sex, blood and gore (using ketchup and beans, I'm guessing, which is okay), fast edits and loud music score.
Thing is: it makes a very clear impression, but the impression is that it's not going anywhere, not giving any food for thought (no pun intended). The highlight of this approach was a two-minute mix of distorted imagery being shown without any score which results into.. nada.. I left after about an hour of viewing. Maybe I expected another take on family life like in “Brutti Sporchi e Cattivi”..
So? My conclusion: a very disappointing movie.
