Who?
You could call it Nu Soul and get your head torn off.. This lady's a vocal talent that covers a wide range of music: soul, rhythm & blues, funk, you name it. Her latest album: "A Change Is Gonna Come" was okay, but what I really liked was the "No Tears" track she made with Pete Rock on the DJ Jazzy Jeff's "The Soul Mixtape". It 'told' me that I really, really should see and hear this dame performing live.

The Show
The Heineken Music Hall is a bit of a moodkiller of a location: nice acoustics, plenty of space to stand or sit, easy access to the bars, but totally soulless..
Leela James changed all that: she rocked the house from start to finish, talking up to the crowd (yes, Amsterdam is a city not a country, Leela, heheh..) and shaking her wild stuff all over the place (which was nice). Her band was solid and professional: a great keyboard man, born to entertain, two lovely and very vocally talented backing singers and that skinny white dude on the guitar that was enjoying himself and sharing the love.
The interlude with "Apache" by The Sugarhill Gang worked like a charm for me!
A bit more about miss James: she doesn't really need a microphone with that voice of hers, I reckon the soundman was having a hell of a time keeping that mic from blowing up ;o)

Conclusion
I sang along, danced my funky butt away and had a good time enjoying a great performance! Special thanks to Hieronymus Fox and his great friend Wouter W. for inviting me over for this gig.

Who?
Well, read about the band here. Still one of my favorite.. well, not favorite.. hold on.. one of the most interesting bands/artists, at least, to me.. Can't really explain what's so appealing about the stuff, but almost every incarnation of the then relevant tastes of artist Green Gartside kinda intrigues me. "Anomie & Bonhomie" is one of my favorite albums: combining rough raps with falsetto sweetness. Dunno what it is.. Still, I got a chance to see him live..

The Show
Heheh.. The gig was in the smaller hall and there were about sixty to eighty people in the place. Funny to scan a crowd and see all the different types of people coming to this show: fiftysomethings, female fans still in their eighties gear, me, my pal Hieronymus Fox, weird..
Anyways, it didn't get any less weird when the Man got on stage: a relaxed, semi-confused-professor type of guy welcomes us to the show. Green Gartside isn't what you expect, but since I didn't know what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised by his nice and somewhat quirky showmanship.
The band? Not your run-of-the-mill backing band, more five friends who like to play together and have a good time supporting Double G.
The songs? All new songs from a yet to be released new album. More sweetness and punk-easy-listening-pop-rock-none-of-the-above type of songs that worked quite well for me. And anyone who has the balls to sing-rap a track by Jeru The Damaja deserves respect, especially if it's been done so well!

Conclusion
45 minute set, one encore. Well, two, but that's a track they'd already played before. And then that's it. Wha? Huh? Yes, boys-n-girls, that's it! Was that disappointing? Not really, the performance was good, the band played the songs they rehearsed and I enjoyed myself, so no, not a disappointment. Even playing earlier stuff was out of the question, but.. It befits the Double G standard. Good enough for me..

Movie: Crash

In Short
Uhm.. How short can I put this? Not really very short.. Two days, Los(t) Angeles, people, race and prejudice.

The Movie
Visuals
Very, very nice visuals, never too emotional, never too blockbuster, never too arthouse. I love the shots with the camera like a fly on the ceiling. The winter scenes are spooky. Love it!

Plot
A description of the plot? Can't be done (see In Short), but I sure as hell can comment on it ;o)
This movie takes us through the lives of several people and the events that connect one or more of them in the story. Ensemble cast movies with multiple storylines are a very tricky category of cinema. Get it right and you win a bunch of Oscars, get it wrong, well.. you get a very messy and presumptuous movie that's not even gonna work as a rental..
In this case, it worked, even though the story can be viewed as bit of a cliché: all people are prejudiced, we all should get along, etc. But it does work!
There is this very delicate balance that's been managed all throughout the movie and that balance keeps you interested in and commited to the characters and the story. Very nicely done!

Cast
The cast consists an interesting and sometimes surprising selection of performers:
Interesting: Sandra Bullock's low-key part shows us the not-so cheery talents of the cheery-faced actress. The incredibly beautiful Thandie Newton also being more than a pretty face.
Surprising: Brendan Fraser, again showing acting talent in a way I didn't expect (check out "Gods And Monsters"). The two minute bit by Tony Danza was very, very nice!
Excellent: Co-producer Don Cheadle (my second all-time favorite black actor) and Terrence Howard (my third favorite) are goddamn unbelievable. Special mention: Matt Dillon who got under my skin coz I really hated and felt sympathy for that character.
The Waste Of Time People: None, period.

Conclusion
Seeing this movie on a large screen really is worth your while coz it strengthens both plot and cast performance. This flick deserved its awards in a year of small budget, socially focussed movies. I don't mind blockbusters, but I'll never forget the two crucial scenes between the little girl (Ashlyn Sanchez) and her dad (the excellent Michael Peña).
Hey, and seeing Martina Sirtis in a role other than Troi is always a blessing ;o)

In Short
Melquaides Estrada, an illegal alien is shot dead and his friend and colleague Pete wants to give him a decent burial. This takes quite some effort, because he promised Melquaides he'd bury him in the village he was born, on the other side of the border.

The Movie
Visuals
A Modern Western with all the visual treats: dry desert landscapes, incredible mountain ranges, muted colors, wide and narrow shots.. Combined with a very strong depiction of life in Nowheresville, West Texas - excellent!

Plot
Well, an innocent man is shot dead and his friend tries to solve the mystery. Once solved, the body is taken across the border in a quest to find the proper burial place.
Why three burials? Well, the first one's where the body's found and so on..
So, no mind-boggling stuff, just the Pure Things That Matter like friendship, honor, revenge, etc. We're talking Westerns here, not Eisenstein (come to think of it: would there be any significant difference?)
First-time director and lead actor Tommy Lee Jones and "Amores Perros" scribe Guillermo Arriaga present a clear story with interesting developments.

Cast
Tommy Lee Jones does what he does best in portraying a wise, frustrated man with a strong sense of duty and obligation who's kinda broken up by grief. His strong presence carries quite a large part of the movie. Interesting parts by Barry Pepper, Dwight Yoakam as the sheriff and Melissa Leo as the.. well.. smartest character of the cast, I guess..
Not really impressed by January Jones' performance..

Conclusion
Western Quest: it works, providing you can keep people interested during the whole enterprise and that didn't really always work that well. I liked the direction, although some of the scenes were a bit crudely edited, don't know if that's done on purpose but it kinda missed its mark sometimes. But the plot was good enough and the acting was solid.
I missed this one during the Rotterdam Film Festival (it was on my list..) and I'm glad I got the chance to see it afterwards. Decent movie, not the wrong type of ego-project, but the right one: there's a sense of really caring about the movie and the whole process of making it.

The Iceman Retireth

Now, I've never ever posted anything sports-related, because.. well.. it's not something I have a lot to say about, let's keep it at that ;o)
But sometimes you have to make an exception, especially since it concerns a great sportsman like Dennis Bergkamp. This guy's the Ultimate Iceman, cool, calm and devilishly cunning with or without the ball on the football pitch (Oh, it's time to consider our US friends: football equals soccer and not, I repeat NOT that thing with the pads and the silly flags, thankyouverymuch..).
Mr. Bergkamp is an incredible allround player that has been playing in the English Premiership for almost ten years, and this year.. sniff.. may well be his final year in professional football.
The man has a lot of brilliant, very, very brilliant moments and goals on record, but this one's my favorite: his impossible goal against Newcastle somewhere, sometime.

without any warning, they got me flabbergasted again
god knows why, sure i got racy stuff but i don't have real public nudity

I put a lot of effort in tagging & posting 2 groups in a proper way
aka not spamming groups
I think its a gr8 feature 4 me & others 2 search & find pix

& what i hate most is that they do this 2 us active 'oldtimers' who add 2 this community, without communicating a thing!

Who?
Well, check out their site.. But first an explanation - 'strips' are the european comic books a.k.a. Bande Dessinée. The link focusses on the Franco-Belgian comics, but you get the idea..
In Holland we also got a great tradition of strips and a group of the artists were invited to create a story about their favorite song (sang in Dutch). And these guys took to the idea like a house on fire. So, now you got a great number Dutch songs drawn as a strip-book, what do you do next? Well, you publish it, of course! So that's what was presented that evening: the (original) performers of the song did their work while on the background on a great big screen the strip was shown. Kinda takes me too many words to explain a very simple concept, godsdammit!

The Gig
Just a coupla names of musicians that performed: Spinvis, Osdorp Posse, Boudewijn de Groot and Henny Vrienten. Some of the Dutch strip-book artists: Gerrit de Jager, Dick Matena, Peter Pontiac and cultural icon Joost Swarte..
The crowd enjoyed themselves very much, most of the performances were very good and seeing the strips projected on that friggin' big screen with the music was sometimes awesome!
As a "Rotterdammer", an (imported) inhabitant of the great city of Rotterdam, I was very proud of hearing and singing (kinda off-key) the local favorite Ketelbinkie, almost brought a tear to my eye, sniff.. heheh..
Big thanks to Roos for the suggestion and offer, excellent idea, me boyo!

Conclusion
Fun, nostalgia, nice music - nuff said!

How I Got Into This Music
Ah well, after discovering the first Zero 7 album, Simple Things, I was very eager to hear more of their stuff. And the 'AnotherLateNight' concept was similar to that of 'Back To Mine': get an interesting artist/band to select and even (re)mix their favorite (remixed) tracks. Sounds confusing, but it works perfectly!

Tracks that got my attention:

Sunrays ft. Yeasterday's New Quintet
Just love the background beats and the laid-back mellowness.

Real Eyes ft Quasimoto
That's what I like about this album concept: you hear artists that you've never encountered before. Love the vocals: the bass-low combined with the nasal voice sounds great.

Witness (Walworth Rd Rockers Dub) ft Roots Manuva
One of the most interesting British artists in years: Roots Manuva. Too bad this one's a dub version so not a lot of RM's vocals on display, but still a nice remix.

Jealousy ft Slum Village
Wow, incredible beats combined with the kinky keyboards (nice alliteration, right?).

Channel 1 Suite ft Cinematic Orchestra
Hmm.. Cinematic indeed, great track for a noire cop movie, but not always an interesting listen..

Christine Bonilla ft Joy Zipper
A cute little trippy track, sometimes great, sometimes not so great..

Ghost Ship In A Storm ft Jim O'Rourke
Never heard of this guy, Jim O'Rourke, but I simply fell in love with this track: the sweet 70s California mellowness with the great guitar licks and those lovely vocals!!

93 Til Infinity ft Souls Of Mischief
Excellent track from 90s hip-hop act Souls of Mischief. When you hear the track you immediately get that nineties rap feeling (if you know that feeling, that is..)

Pra Manha ft Da Lata
Wow!Wow!Wow! You have to be a corpse in a very developed state of decomposition not to want to dance to this track! It's the ultimate "Lord, I love the summer beach" atmosphere track ever made..

Bonnie & Clyde (Herbert's Fred & Ginger Mix) ft Serge Gainsbourg
Funny thing about this track - I found the original version and realized that the original music's been sample by MC Solaar in 'Le Nouveau Western'. Just love this track: the buildup of different dance tempos is incredible - first the instrumental intro, then the vocals followed by the heavy bass drum beat and that followed by a great lazy bass!! You cannot ignore this song, it's just too catchy.. And can you imagine ex-sex kitten Brigitte Bardot singing? Well, it's her vocals.

Happiness (Ashley Beedle's West Coast Mix) ft Shawn Lee

This is one of my all-time favorite tracks! That crazy bass loop and miss Striplin's unbelievably great voice. This song's also been haunting me coz I couldn't remember where I heard it being sampled. Long Live the Interwub: the track's been sampled by Junior MAFIA in 'Get Money'. Conclusion
Excellent album, mixing of styles and beats working just right for me. I always have this one on me mp3-player. Of course it's not a Zero 7 album I'm actually reviewing, but it's their selection of music they dig that I'm writing about. And that selection is very, very nice!
ATTENTION: their next studio album, The Garden will be somewhere in May 2006 - check it out!
