A small guide to Korean Smileys.

Posted on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 1:29 PM
As I'm a frequent user of smileys (or emoticons) I thought it would be nice to include a small reference guide of these handy text-enhancing (and off course sweet) buddies.
This Guide is by no means complete, it's just a short entry into the wonderfull world of asian typing (^o^)

The one's I prefer to use are 'Korean-Styled'. In my opinion they're more expressive an less silly then the European / American ones. The whereabouts of this typical form of smiley traces itself back to battle.net. This is an online service of game-developer blizzard entertainment, the creators of the War- and Starcraft, as well as the Diablo-franchise. This online battle.net service enables players form all over the world to compete against each other.
As playing computer games is a possible form of employment in South-Korea the online gaming industry is very focussed on fulfilling their every need. The use of their smileys is a direct example of this.

Okay, now that's been clearified let's get on with the guide:

Expressing emotions:
(^_^) = smile

(^o^) = laughing out loud

d(^_^)b = thumbs up (not ears)

(T_T) = sad (it's a crying face)

(-.-)Zzz = sleeping

(Z.Z) = sleepy person

\(^_^)/ = cheers, hurrah

(*^^*) = shyness

(-_-); = sweating (as in ashamed)

(^_^);; = sorry! my mistake

(?_?) = nonsense, i don't know

(^_~) = wink

(o.O) = surprise

v(^_^)v = victory

(>^_^)> = hugging

(>^_^)> <(^_^<) = hugging each other (^o^)

Animals:
>))))'> = a fish

>))))'><'((((< = kissing fish (^o^)

<')++++< = a fish bone

Vm~ = a fox

() () = a rabbit
(^.^)

(^(oo)^) = a pig

('v')
(( )) = a bird
-"-"-

()()() ()()()
(-(-(-.-)-)-) = rabbit gang

= = = = :} = a snake

Things:
@}-;--`-- = a rose

>(/////)< = a candy

=]::::::> = a sword

---E = a fork

A friend of mine was sent a message by a Korean woman with the following symbol:

*^^*

Is the inclusion of this 'shyness' symbol an indication that she wishes him to pursue her affections? Please help internet friends - you are my lonely friend's last hope in a world that offers so little and takes oh so much...

May God bless you all!

Hi,

I'm chatting with a Korean girl and she uses ~~ and ~~~ a lot when she talks, often several times in the same sentence. Is this a smiley or what? If so, what does it mean? :-)

Thanks in advance!

I learned about this one: It means frusterated:

OTL (The O is the guy's head, the T is his arms and the L is the guy's legs)

# re: A small guide to Korean Smileys.

6/3/2007 4:14 AM by Hello
oops sorry I meant to say *frustrated

# re: A small guide to Korean Smileys.

6/3/2007 4:49 AM by Jane
Well I'm a Korean, and it's amazing that many people are interested in Korean smileys. Actually we don't call it smileys, but 'emoticons'. ^-^

And yes OTL is frustrated.. it's like the guy is about to bang his head on the ground!

Kenneth, I think ~~~ doesn't mean anything~~~ lol It's just a habit of saying,
and I kind of use it to stretch the words, like 'sooooooo' to 'so~~~~~'

Hmm I think the hardest smiley to 'translate' is -_- it also could be like -_-;; or ?.? or
-?- we use them A LOT and it kinda means 'huh?' 'what?' 'I can't believe it' 'speechless' but not in the good way. There is an adjective for it, and I looked up in the dictionary and it means ; dumbfounded, absurd, be struck dumb.. etc etc.

Hope you'll find this helpful ^0^

the korean typing doesn't work and it is showed as a question mark!! this is a very good situation to use this : -_-
okay.. it isn't ?.?, it's -.-
and it isn't -?- either.. there should be a square where the question mark is.

Thanks !

Thanks for Korean Smilie/Emoticon guide. Wow this has been around since July 2004. I have a good Korean friend who I met in July 2004, she went back to Korea September 2004. I've always noticed she uses ~~~~~ when we chat sometimes or in emails. I never knew what the ~~~~ was until now. I thought it was just a girl thing. ***THANKS to JANE for explaining this***

My friend uses these: ^^; or ^^;;;; < ---- sweating or sweating a lot

Today she used: ^___________^ < ---- very happy

The amazing thing is, I got to hang out with her again! She came back to Canada to study English again and stayed in my city from April to August 2007!!! She's just gone back to Korea to start her career and life, but it was great to be able hang out for so long, one last time! She's helped me so much. She makes me think Korean people are awesome!

Heya,

What about when you change the mouth from _ to ~ so this txt msg smiley would mean what exactly?

^~^

This would help a lot, sometimes you need to be able to translate these smiley's in order to understand the context of a Korean txt message..
